Joe Bass (Burt Lancaster) is an American fur trapper when he encounters a group of Kiowa Indians. They offer him a slave, Joseph Lee (Ossie Davis), whom they had previously taken from Comanches. Bass and Lee are forced to track the party, hoping to take back the furs. Bass kills several of the scalphunters, by intentionally starting a rock slide in the mountains.
