Description: Documents the life of a Latin prisoner at Rahway State Prison in New Jersey. Explores prison life and life outside prison for the Latin population. Focuses on an hour-long picnic behind bars with family and friends.
Complete Record: A look at Puerto Ricans in a New Jersey prison. Hispanic inmates discuss discrimination in the judicial and sentencing process, the lack of rehabilitation programs and the low wages they receive for prison labor. They blame the inequities of the economic system for their plight both in prison and on the outside. Inmates appeal to young people to examine their situation before committing a crime and to work instead in unifying the Puerto Rican community to improve living conditions and educational opportunities. Mostly in Spanish with English voice-over translation.
