Description: Produced in the wake of the Three Mile Island accident by Westinghouse Nuclear Energy Systems, "The Nuclear Look" is a late 1970s color promotional film that promotes the nuclear power industry as a safe and efficient component of infrastructure with a bright place in America's future and posits Westinghouse as ready and able to tackle all needs for construction and production of new plants. Some of America's oldest nuclear power plants are shown in the film, including Connecticut Yankee and Shippingport, as proof that nuclear power can be viable. [Music] [Applause] in the beginning energy from the atom was greeted as the savior of mankind it would make deserts Bloom it would control weather a little pellet would run the family car for a year that was in the 1950s and early 60s then in 1969 and the years that followed poison pens were directed like arrows at the nuclear power industry nuclear decisions became headline topics and subjects of national controversy meanwhile the original nuclear power plant at shipping Port which had come online in 1957 went on performing reli ibly and Beyond expectations the historic Connecticut Yankees started to produce power in 1968 and proceeded to compile its impressive record that reached a total of 20 billion kilowatt hours produced in 5 years the performance of the sanre plant also provided a convincing rebuttal to the alarms of the Rabid nuclear critics the Gade plant came online in 1970 as planned and as scheduled [Music] despite the excellent record of the pioneering nuclear power plants the atomic energy commission remained a focal point of controversy public hearings on proposed new plants provided convenient platforms for professional anti-nuclear Korea men as well as for airing and recording the serious legitimate concerns of local people who found themselves participants in nuclear decisions groundbreaking and sight preparation for nuclear plants continued because the decision makers of the electric utility industry knew these plants had to be brought online they accepted the frustrations and delays as inevitable in an emerging technology and they continued to commit the huge Investments nuclear power plants represent more and more of them began to come online and to demonstrate that an economically viable and totally reliable new source of energy had evolved from the unique and long-standing partnership that exists between the electric utility industry and its major suppliers Westinghouse was a major contributor and prime mover in nuclear power development from the [Music] beginning the Specialty Metals division is one of several Westinghouse manufacturing divisions which took on the job of converting Concepts and drawings to the hardware of nuclear components this division helped develop the super Alloys and the techniques for fabricating them that go into nuclear fuel clading steam generator tubing fuel Rod assemblies and the many other critical reactor components in the late 1960s new elements began to influence the nuclear decisions environmental requirements began to increase the capital and operating costs of all types of power generation today the demand for skilled labor to build equipment and plants is outg growing Supply a rash of strikes has resulted in Lost production and delayed plant construction schedules the labor cost is growing [Music] exponentially material costs are rising and inevitably nuclear plant costs have increased but other costs are also rising and fuel cost comparisons show that despite all the difficulties nuclear is clearly the lowest cost power generation fuel the growth of the nuclear power industry continued even though the complexities of the new technology continue to create new challenges the wisdom of the electrical industry's investments in nuclear power were becoming more and more evident as the facts of the energy Crisis began to be understood by the general public there was still plenty of coal however environmental regulations made much of the traditional Supply unsuitable for power generation and court rulings introduced entirely new elements into the nuclear picture in the Calbert Cliff's decision the courts ruled that the nuclear power plants were being built in violation of the Environmental Policy Act of 1970 it was evident from reports and commission actions that followed that nuclear plant licensing procedure would be in for drastic changes the Calbert Cliff's decision provided new openings for the legal and political opponents of nuclear power to create new headlines and complicate the already tedious and timeconsuming Licensing procedure by introducing new delaying tactics the Calbert Cliff's decision added the environmental impact report to the list of required documents in the nuclear plant procedure but the industry has taken the Calbert Cliffs decision in stride environmental reporting has become a scientific service provided by Westinghouse that takes the uncertainty and speculation out of the required environmental report scientists in all the necessary disciplines make onthe scene observations and gather evidence to support their findings the kind of evidence that will hold up in court in the meantime in fact public opinion is swinging in favor of nuclear power the current Public Information Program survey shows that support for nuclear power exceeds opposition by nearly 2 to1 of all adults questioned 54% said they would favor a nuclear power plant in their area while 27% would oppose it the same survey shows that 74% would oppose a fossil plant while only 133% would be in favor of it the federal power commission reports that between 1972 and the end of 1975 a total of 64 new nuclear plants are SC schedule to be in commercial operation Westinghouse nuclear energy systems is ready for the new nuclear era huge Investments are being committed regularly to new manufacturing facilities the plant of Tampa is one of six major plants to be built in the past 3 years the Tampa division was designed constructed and staffed specifically for the manufacturer of nuclear steam generators and [Music] pressurizes the record here speaks for itself 55 steam generators were delivered from this plant in 32 months all on time and are specified and the plant is not yet operating at its full capacity the record at Tampa is matched by the new facility at Pensacola which was built to produce High Precision reactor internals the Ultra Modern plant has closed circuit television and Machine Tool intercoms Pensacola has turned out 14 sets of reactor internals in 24 months all on time even though both the Tampa and Pensacola plants are new both are being expanded substantially to meet the growing demand for Westinghouse pwr nuclear [Music] plants the nuclear fuel division operates plants in Cheswick Pennsylvania and this new facility in Columbia South Carolina which is the largest nuclear fuel fabrication plant in the world [Music] the electromechanical division at Cheswick Pennsylvania manufactures electromechanical equipment needed in nuclear plants reactor coolant [Music] pumps control rod Drive mechanisms and primary Loop isolation valves the newest facility is this nuclear Training Center which is a joint venture of Westinghouse and the Commonwealth Edison Company the center at Zion Illinois trains a present-day power plant operator and prepares him to qualify for the aec license the center contains a zero power reactor which permits trainees to perform core loadings the trainees operate a control panel which duplicates and reacts as an actual plant would with these plants Westinghouse has a total capability in research engineering and Manufacturing to build the nuclear power plants of today and those of the future the Westinghouse systems bring the advantages of standardization to the nuclear steam Supply system the nuclear plant itself and the information package that goes with it nuclear steam Supply system drawings and Technical information are available to provide a nuclear plant project with a running start the Westinghouse concept streamlines the licensing procedure and reduces costly plant delays there's plenty of room in the Westinghouse pressurized water reactor systems for flexibility and Innovation by 1973 12 Westinghouse nuclear plants were operating with many more under construction or contract and in the negotiation stage [Music] we believe this removes any doubt that nuclear power is here to stay however we do not believe the nuclear controversies are over we know problems remain to be solved but Westinghouse nuclear energy systems is ready for the new nuclear era with the plant capacity the human skills and the manpower to bring new plants into being as ordered and on schedule nuclear power is rapidly becoming the only hope for abundant energy in our time and we have 8,000 talented and experienced people dedicated to providing it Westinghouse nuclear energy systems [Music]
