Description: This footage captures a 1973 National Cutting Horse Association contest in Fort Worth. In cutting, riders are judged on their ability to separate a single cow from the herd and keep it away for a short period of time. The sport began on cattle ranches, where cows were often separated for the purpose of vaccination or sorting. By the turn of the 20th century, competitions between riders arose. In 1946, a group of owners founded the National Cutting Horse Association in Fort Worth.
