The Moon: A giant step in geology

Investigates the topography of the moon. Demonstrates some techniques used by scientists to study lunar rock samples. Suggests that the lunar crust was formed by geologic processes similar to those that occur on the earth., Records the information being uncovered about the origin of the moon by the examination of geologic structures brought back to earth by astronauts. Uses telescopic photography and clips from the Apollo moon landings to show the moon's two basic landforms--maria and highlands. Compares, through microphotography, rocks from the moon's maria with the earth's lava flows. Identifies and dates rocks from the older highland areas and presents, through animation, possible speculations of the order and time frame in which these structures formed.
