The bluebonnet, the Texas state flower, is a remembrance of her selflessness. Based on the book by Tomie dePaola., In this live-action interpretation, a Native American carver shares a Comanche legend with a group of schoolchildren about how a young girl's courage and sacrifice brought the bluebonnet to Texas. Long ago, a terrible drought dried up the land where the Comanche lived, leaving the people hungry. The selfishness of the people had angered the Great Spirit and he vowed that no rain would come until the people gave up their most prized possessions. Many died from starvation including She-Who-Is-Alone's mother and father. The girl was left with only her precious warrior doll, Quanah, for companionship. While everyone waited for someone else to make the required sacrifice, She-Who-Is-Alone knew it was her doll the Great Spirit desired and offered it to him as a burnt offering. After scattering the cold ashes to the four winds, She-Who-Is-Alone fell asleep. When she awoke, she found herself in a field of blue flowers, a sign of forgiveness. Seeing her without Quanah, the people realized what the child had done for them and renamed her She-Who-Dearly-Loved-Her-People. Each spring, the Great Spirit remembers the girl's selflessness and sends the bluebonnets to Comanche lands, now known as Texas.
