you can't be with a child 24 hours a day you can't wrap him in cotton and shield him from the world that's what you tried to do with Robert well how can you say that it was you who encouraged him to fly and why shouldn't I it was the only thing in his life he wanted to do that he ever got to do Sally I won't listen to this kind of talk my son is dead but my conscience is clear you can take it and twist it any way you want to Mother Norwood I have no regrets he was happy with me that's something I'll always remember while we still have Davey and he's going to be the picture of his father couldn't we go in the living room well of course if if you prefer it Sally what have you been doing all day I didn't do much of anything you must have done something you were late getting home all right I'll tell you I I was looking for a job a job well I had no idea did you find one only one I really liked but I haven't made up my mind yet well might be wonderful for you we'd be very happy to take care of Davey while you're away but mother no would it would be a pleasure look you don't understand if I take this job it means moving into town and renting a small apartment for Davey and me oh I see and who's going to take care of Davey well he'll be in school while I'm at work that's no problem well this big house is going to be terribly Lonely with both of you gone yes I know that's why I hesitated well you needn't worry about me Sally I'll get along very nicely with Unice mother Norwood how serious is your heart condition oh Dr Rogers exaggerates I'm sure it's not as bad as he'd like to have me believe no Sally you've made up your mind I haven't made up my mind I only said I was considering it I understand there comes a time when we must think of ourselves first I'm not thinking of myself first I I even feel good guilty about leaving you alone to go to the family for the weekend but you've got to it's your mother's birthday you can't disappoint her mother Norwood I want to do what's right but I'm so confused I'll don't be everything will be all right why don't you go to the kitchen and ask Unice to make us some tea gosh mom I can hardly wait H me go now don't you go getting up at dawn young man we're leaving right after breakfast couldn't we have breakfast there grandpa might tell me some jokes his jokes are so old a few more hours won't hurt them think can I place the kids as soon as we get there can I you know you can you can do anything you want may I intrude well come in and you're not intruding we're packing Davey you're much too excited you won't sleep oh he'll calm down I'll see to he takes his nap tomorrow I wish you didn't feel you had to go there every weekend it's not every weekend and you said you didn't mind oh I don't mind I was just thinking of Davey it would be better for him if he had one home we do have one home this is our home you've been very good to Davey and me we're going to go on a bus in a street car it's such a short trip you should take a taxi I'd be glad to pay for it more fun on a bus than the street car they got other kids on them and heaven knows how many diseases goly who's that for here we are ma'am I'll serve it Unice you get the phone yes ma'am Cathy Davies his was last month I'm six it's an anniversary you may not remember Sally but when you get to be my age little things mean a lot it was 2 years ago today that Davey came to live with me I mean you and Davey two years seems like yesterday beg pardon there's a gentleman on the phone for you miss Sally thank you excuse me I forgot to ask UNF is chocolate yes honey it's Larry I know you told me not to call you there but honey I'm aging rapidly can't you tell me now instead of making me wait until tomorrow night well your offer is very attractive sir but I just haven't been able to make up my mind yes sir thank you sir sir who was it Sally it was that man I talked to about a job today I couldn't help overhearing you said you hadn't decided I thought you had well he was so nice I thought I should tell him in person when are we going to Cut the Cake mother Norwood right now and you can blow out the candles here's to many more anniversaries for the three of us great for Grandma you blew them out Grandma you get your wish and the good thing you got them out with that many candles you could burn the house down just you will yours comes along it'll take a hurricane to blow them off is that so well we probably should have waited for Larry but I just couldn't stand the heat gosh is Larry Come on Mommy the party wouldn't be seen you in a long time it has been some time you going to have a piece of cake mother Norwood mother Norwood's probably on our way somewhere well I don't want to interrupt the festivities I just came by to wish you a very happy birthday I have a cab waiting thank you isn't it way past our bedtime Davey but gosh it's Saturday night in the partk I couldn't say no but we'll see to it that he gets plenty of rest when he gets home an alligator bag oh you shouldn't have just a little remembrance that's all well it was certainly very nice of you and and Davey and I'll be back first thing Monday morning did you remember to keep your appointment Sally appointment Yes dear about the job oh the job I didn't go tell her you seem so nervous are you ill no but well it's just that you have a cab should know it you got the start of a grave Illness but it's not your heart then what is it well it begins in loneliness it's aggravated by approaching old age and the desire to be needed most commonly it's called faking Dr Rogers now my DEA it'll only drive away the people you want to hold close I won't let you do it I've known you and your family too long yes much too long you can leave now you can get up out of that bed now as a matter of fact I strongly advise it good day miss Norwood is she going to be all right doctor well yes Sally as a matter of fact I'd say she's in considerably better shape than you are right now I don't understand your mother-in-law has a very healthy heart but spells well now Sally babies cry when they want attention or affection you know that well grown folks can't resort to that device they've got to be a little more subtle to get what they want you understand now I suggest that the next move might be up to you and David here good day doctor can tell you how a heart sounds and looks but there's a lot he can't tell you it'll be much better for Davey and me to have our own place and for you too we each need our own kind of privacy privacy yes I'll have a lot of that whole house full I agree that's very bad I really think you should get out and do something too [Music] hello is Miss Sally in well I'll see sir was she expecting you she called just a few minutes ago I'm Mr bourman yes sir well just have a seat in there I'll tell her thank you excuse me you're the young man on the telephone I don't believe we've ever spoken I'm Larry bourman you must be Mrs Norwin I knew you were trying to take him away from me him my grandson oh he's a good kid just like his mother you mean his father Mr Borman oh I'm sure his father was a SW guy too I think if he knew how I feel about he does know my son doesn't appreciate the way you and Sally have been scheming behind my back to take Davey away from me I don't get you you sound like we're trying to kidnap him or something we're just trying to give him a break make him happy those are not your words you're just repeating what Sally asked you to say look Mrs Norwood nobody puts words in my mouth I'm being honest that's more than you can say you want your own son back and you can't have him so using Davey as a substitute then that isn't right and you want to be a substitute father for d maybe well that isn't right either Mr Borman Larry I just want what's I'm sorry Sally I didn't start this but at least now she knows of course I know all of this secretive talk about a job and lying I hadn't told you about Larry because I had made up my mind and I didn't want to upset you I thought you were ill just a few minutes ago on the phone Sally agreed to marry me she's too to Young to bury your in a house full of ghosts and it isn't fair to Davey he deserves to have a father his father is here no Mrs Norwood he's gone why do you say things like that your son is gone I'm sorry but you've got to accept it you've got to find a new meaning for your life and a new Direction you've got to learn to walk by yourself it's wrong to use people Mrs [Music] [Music] no mother nor where can I have mine [Music] Davey dear you busted it well it was an accident and and besides I told you that I didn't want you to play with it my daddy wouldn't let me your daddy would have agreed with me he's afraid of you too just like Mommy is well that's not so it is to everybody's afid it's no fun here you mustn't say that what can we do to have more fun I can't play that the kids and I can't get dirty I can't do anything I hate it here oh don't say that Davey I love you we'll find some nice children for you to play with oh I bet you when Daddy was a little boy he didn't have any fun either [Music] Larry what could have happened to her nothing you don't need to worry about her she can take care of herself she's been gone so long it's not like her I want to go Mommy you can't leave without saying goodbye Davey well we could come back sometime and say goodbye we hav been waiting a long time honey well I'd better tell Unice oh mother Norwood we were so worried I don't know why I've been listening to Dr Rogers convinced me of how healthy I am we've been waiting to say goodbye I wanted to thank you for everything you're sure you'll be all right why of course I'm a grown woman perfectly capable now you run along it's almost time for Davey's dinner goodbye mother Norwood goodbye Sally goodbye Davey goodbye even if you did bust my plane I I can't leave without saying this I've got a lot of admiration for you Mrs no it's easy to look good winning but to take a defeat standing up at something else and what one more thing advice you probably won't take it you don't have to make an enemy out of everyone you meet friends are a lot easier to make and keep and this house it's big enough to hold a few friends is that all you have to say to me just that and goodbye Miss Snow [Music] excuse me Mrs Norwood would you want dinner any earlier tonight no the same as usual Unice and set places for two for two yes ma' [Applause] [Music] if walls could talk
