Complete Record: Released in 1941 this surprisingly moving propaganda short is set in the spring of 1940 and portrays the New York City arrival of a little kid from Warsaw. The kid goes across the street to play stickball with the other neighborhood kids. The kids call him "greenhorn" and taunt his inability to speak English ("Speak American," they shout.). They decide to let him have a try at the plate and when he hits a home run they enthusiastically embrace him into their ranks joyously proclaiming, "He's a Yankee!" Obviously produced as a propaganda short to encourage American kids to be tolerant and hospitable towards incoming W.W.II refugees the film is very well-made and manages to be an effective tear-jerker even today (in the vein of Frank Capra). Very sentimental and jingoistic in that uniquely wartime Hollywood kind of way.
