The Goldbergs: Episode 1564. Date: September 23, 1943. Cast: Gertrude Berg (Molly Goldberg); James R. Waters (Jake Goldberg); Roslyn Silber (Rosalie Goldberg); Alfred Ryder (Sammy Goldberg); Menasha Skulnik (Uncle David).
Announcer introduction: "Molly Goldberg certainly has a one track mind... and though she sometimes talks in circles, her deep faith in mankind always carries her down the path to the goal she's seeking. Again Molly has triumphed. Though Grace and George swindled not only the Goldbergs, but the townspeople of Lastenbury, Molly backed them up and persuaded her neighbors to give them another chance... Her spirit of kindness seems to have broken down Grace's arrogance and bitterness and has set the whole town to helping them... and Molly is overjoyed... Listen..."
Announcer close: "Molly's good deed seems to have infected the town with a spirit of generosity. Grace and George are getting more than a chance... they are being driven into another life... but Jake has his doubts... if not about Grace then about Molly... because this can be a very very bad habit for his nerves and sciatica."
A hallmark of the golden age of radio, The Goldbergs (1929-1946) was one of the earliest entertainment programs to authentically explore Jewish life in America. Learn more at cinema.ucla.edu.
