Description: Epstein's last film before he broke with the avant-garde movement evokes the eerie lyricism of the Poe tale. The mysterious house of Usher is visited by a friend who finds Roderick following the family tradition of painting his wife's portrait with such passion that he draws the life from her. Refusing to accept her death, Roderick declines to have her coffin nailed shut. The film is Note worthy for the array of effects which enhance the macabre plot: slow-motion, low angle shots, negative images and optical printing. (Circulates)
