Description: The Holy Roman Empire had not yet been established when the Barbarians were on the move, destroying order and sacking even the city of Rome, in the year of 410. Later, heathen Vikings set off on their expeditions of burning, pillaging, and raping. The flame of Christianity was kept alive through the chaos of the Dark Ages by monks in the remote corners of Ireland and Italy. Charlemagne, their ally, introduced militancy to European Christianity through the conversation of the Saxons by force, and when Pope Leo III crowned him Holy Roman Emperor in the year 800, a new tie between Church and State was established.
