THE BIG WIDE HIGHWAY

[Music] [Music] sammy and his father are farmers today is the day they're going to take their turkeys to market in their truck now the loading is finished and sammy and his father can begin their drive to town goodbye mother goodbye be careful sammy and his father won't drive too fast but they mustn't drive too slowly either they must get the turkeys to market as soon as possible to get the best price it's a good thing they don't have to go very far on this gravel road it wouldn't be good for the truck or the turkeys now this road is paved and it's smoother but it doesn't go all the way to town it ends in the highway see the highway ahead see all the cars and trucks that are on it see how fast they go by this is the road that sammy and his father will take to town they will carry the turkeys to market quickly and safely on the highway sammy's truck is too old to go as fast as some of the other trucks and cars on the highway someday sammy hopes his father will buy a new and bigger truck there goes mr brown in his gasoline truck he delivers gasoline to filling stations along the highway his truck is big and heavy but it's faster than sammy's truck but there's a truck we will pass it's an auto carrier carrying new cars from the factory where they were made to places where they'll be sold highways are important they help people travel they help people take things they grow and make to other places look there's a curve better slow down a little do you know how sammy knew there was a curve ahead on the highway is safer because of the signs that warn us of dangers ahead it won't be long now before sammy and his father get their turkeys to market but listen a highway policeman were they going too fast is that why he's stopping them no the speed limit is 45 miles per hour the policeman wants to tell father that one of the rear tires needs air but it will be all right until they get to the filling station up ahead they'll drive slowly though will they ever get the turkeys to market look airplanes think how fast they could take the turkeys to market in an airplane but trucks are best for short hauls even if they do have flat tires once in a while this is a truck stop where truck drivers stop to eat and to have their trucks serviced just look at all the trucks there's one from chicago and it's going clear to los angeles it will be on the highway several days look at the size of that truck why its wheels are almost as tall as sammy and look at that it looks like a special kind of truck it is it's a refrigerator truck this unit up front keeps the inside colder than your mother's refrigerator while the truck is traveling across the country this is another kind of refrigerator truck in which meat and all sorts of foods can be kept fresh and good while they are being delivered to stores and restaurants now father is ready the tire is all right once more it's off again taking the turkeys to town and off goes the big truck on its way to los angeles out onto the highway highways help us carry things in trucks from factories where they are made to stores where they are sold highways help us carry foods in trucks from farms where they are grown to people who want to buy them highways are for transportation and so are railroads [Music] trains carry people and things from one place to another [Music] refrigerated cars like refrigerated trucks carry food tank cars carry oil and other liquids and box cars carry all sorts of things sammy wonders why some things are hauled by train and some by truck do you think you can find out what does father see up ahead a car has pulled off the side of the road perhaps father can help something's wrong with the engine of their car father will try to fix it sammy wants to know where are they going where have they come from you can see the places on a map this is a highway map of the united states the boy and his family started out here and they drove along this highway they drove through many towns and cities on the way they've come a long way but they still have a long way to go and the map is helping them find their way but that isn't all the map shows it shows that there are highways everywhere in our country joining all the cities and towns together trucks and cars and buses drive on the highways carrying people and things from one place to another sammy's father has fixed the engine the boy and his family can be on their way again now sammy and his father can go on to market with the turkeys it isn't far to town now there's the sign marking where sammy and his father will turn off the highway goes on to other towns past other farms clear across the country but sammy and his father turn off here soon at the edge of town they reach the turkey market they are finally here and how are the turkeys fine just as big and beautiful as they were when they left the farm sammy's father will be able to sell the turkeys at a good price wasn't it fun taking the turkeys to market
