scott island a hurricane maybe it's gonna break tonight only it's gonna be inside the dolphin sounds funny but that's what he says you know what he meant david yes danny i'm afraid to do it was bad enough when they started poaching our waters now they've took the housebreaker what happened to me last night can happen to any of you i say run them sorry penis out just a minute just a minute those people have a right to use this harbor david scott gave him permits think david scott that'll be starving and shook with the aid come with her teen his kids will be going to school without shoes why not let him speak for himself evening jeremiah you mean jake you were talking about starvation was that it hi david starfish you look pretty well fed not for long not within people on scott island meaning the sardines yeah meaning that what's the matter with them jake they're ruining scott island that's what's the matter with them is that what you all think well speak up someone anyone all right aunt honey david it just seems there's been a sign of trouble on this island it's since the sardine but moved in can you prove it's because of the sardine fleet of their families well none of those things happen before they came here and you call that fruit proof enough for me how long have you been on scott island two years so we've had troubles these past two years should we blame them all on you what kind of talk is that scott i'm a law-abiding taxpayer and that's more than you can say to them sardines squatters living like animals they do it's a large truth david those folk don't belong here you never should have let them in i was under the impression this was a free country there's a tablet out there in the town square lots of names on it some of them spelled scott i seem to remember some other writing too about how they died to make men free so so the sardine runs moved north fishermen follow fish these people ask for anchorage teapot bay was open i assigned it to them that's my job i'm have a master they're here and they'll stay they stay and we stop here david that's the size of it best part of our earnings come from the summer people most of it from fishing one way or the other jeremiah there are plenty of fish and plenty of ocean to go around i'm afraid not david them sardine boats are first seniors they'll clear the waters around here smack out a bait and no bait fish no game fish no fish no business least way's not on scott island at all because david scott got to reap the monument and feel them know now wait a minute all of you i've authorized anchorage for a small fleet of persian as that's all respectable hard-working men with clean decent families you take your oath on that david yes i do i wouldn't if i were you you're not captain dan the harbour master has sole control over anchorage is that right aye non-revocable i the sardine fleet will be a teapot value until further notice scott if there's trouble you've got soul control over that too to the landsman the ocean is simply water but the men who go to sea know her landmarks are as clear as the mountains and rivers and barbed wire fences the fast running currents the eddying backstreams the shoals the reefs and the continental shelf those who live by fishing are as possessive of some corner of salt water as the cattlemen of the old west of a section of the unfenced range like the cowmen of the legends they'll defend their imaginary rights sometimes with their lives ahoy clear off you're in a respected area i know you're wrong no sardine fisherman wanted savvy the closed area begins at the point you telling me clear off i know you're on the chart we don't want trouble louis all right pulling the nets we'll go [Music] net [Music] teapot bay a steam kettle shaped inlet on the seawood side of scott island a century back it was filled with a creek of tall rigged ships the clank of harpoons a welles chatty from teapot bay a double dozen yankee ahabs beat southward toward their particular destinies now it's timbers rotted with a hundred winters of suspended animation teapot bay has come alive again it's heartbeating with a different pulse to a stranger melody an alien rhythm morning hello oh hi david late today yeah the uh nets meet mandy ah this is danny i thought he and frankie ought to get acquainted they're about the same age how do you do danny countess danny mrs callus hi good morning david uh what are you uh what do you say my son [Music] suppose you've uh showed danny our boat huh you got sea legs i was born with them come on what happened louie you ran my boat tore my nets up why david that was beyond the point he's looking for trouble stay out of his way halloween we must live and if we must we'll fight listen to me louie i stuck my neck out of my eye for your people don't start any more trouble we all have strike trouble woolens house was around the other night are you blaming us for that no no i'm not blaming anybody the bullen is telling everybody that your people did it he's getting them all riled up any more trouble louie and i won't be able to hold him do you understand i won't be able to hold him we cause you so much trouble i think that perhaps we find another anchorage next year we do not come back to scott you give up easily louie it's either go away or fight them david i am not a patient man and if i stay i will hurt someone no way no that's the worst possible thing you can do you must be patient give it time you've only been here a few weeks louie they're good people they're just slow with strangers give it time give it time huh they tear my nets up they insult my wife and you say give it time how much time should i maintain papa can danny come on back to i don't me please perhaps please david please i promise i won't be in the way all right danny i guess it'll be okay just be sure you're back by several captain daniel wallace's boat thank you my friend i will give it time if they let me [Music] david what have you got there that's why louis didn't go fishing he had to mend his nets as the reason come on homie danny but grandpa wait till i tell you what happened no need to tell me you smell a sardine you hear me hi so long david thanks for a swell sure danny bye jim bye boy oh blame the boy captain and i took him over to teapot day all right i trust you look after him david you too jeff he was perfectly safe louis conniss is a fine seaman that's his may be but there's no call for a boy to be meddling in affairs which ain't his concern that's my only objection now wait a minute dan are you trying to tell us that you agree with jake bolandi's crown no what i do is my affair but that don't mean i approve of making trouble for the boy you may no trouble he has a fine new friend that's all maybe old friends are the best david maybe you'd better give that some thought too well he's still got time there ain't so many of us left you see him janet did you see him clear nope i don't think so paw well it don't matter none we know who they was we do paw yeah it was them strangers from over teapot bay wreaking a guilt in sardines well all we got to do is go and fetch them i'll go call the constable close the window girl [Music] fear hungover scott island an ill wind rotten with a stench of some foul and decaying shore nobody fished the lobstermen's lines went unchecked chowder went uncooked beds are made nobody did anything but talk and nobody talked about a whisper maybe because they were afraid that what they were saying would be overheard maybe because they were afraid to hear it themselves david excuse me hello hello what do you think about all this you've heard the talk yes i've heard it you have an opinion it doesn't add up the sardine crews wouldn't jeopardize the whole season like this not in the right minds least ways on the other hand that leaves the local people it doesn't seem likely could be somebody from outside yeah did you find any evidence yeah some got a set of fingerprints it could be the robbers not a list of the items that were stolen i wish you'd run them into the mainland if you could take them to state troopers right now sooner the better david would you take them yourself all right be nice for people around here to have some facts to chew on instead of making them up as they go along outside's turning i'd better go with it oh david bring back one or two of those trooper boys if they've got any despair you expecting that kind of trouble i don't know the bullen crowd is having another one of those unofficial town meetings keep your eyes open jeff do what you can to keep peace until i get back i'll do all i can i'll keep the ship to shore opens running wood right i'll keep you posted hello danny [Music] [Music] what's the matter constable you afraid to go to teapot bay and enforce the law you don't arrest on unfollowed suspicion not without evidence you don't at least weighs nothing this time as long as i'm deputy reckon we can fix that you just deputize me jeremiah and a few of the boys we'll stroll on over to teapot bay and get you all the evidence you need listen jake dave scott went to get the state troopers now when they get here they'll know what to do we don't need no police to tell us what we already know doing boys how long we gonna put up with it listen to me how long are we gonna put up with it how are we gonna have these sardine fishermen hang around on that jake here i gotta tell you jake this ain't legal can cause a pack of trouble you know don't say [Music] come to think of it constable maybe you better come along with us to see that we don't violate no laws like maybe uh trespassing or expectorating on government property you too jeff just so we keep it nice and proper and respectable are you asking jake are you telling same thing ain't it and what if you're wrong what if the robbers are not at teapot bay it could be you know sure a sea could run dry like the good books say that's possible but tate likely not this year not on scott island come on everybody let's go all right come on board girl david good how about the paraphrase yes they belong to the two we picked up landing and skip down the coast of this stuff on are they known criminals yes and not only be a sardine fisherman either you want to check this stone probably against the list here maybe i'd better give it a glance there's a nice pair of binoculars still want those state troopers david no i don't think so not with this evidence i don't think there'll be any trouble now lucky thing you've already had the case of though i wish we always had this kind of happy ending yeah [Music] thanks [Music] is this the man you saw well is he i don't know i can't remember it was dark and i can't remember but it could have been one of the men you saw oh i don't know i can't remember hey jake what do you know you ever seen these before jeremiah i don't know they make all right yeah important brand new haven't even used them they look the same to me but then the ones that were stolen yeah i guess so jake i i guess they're going to be that was you huh i might have known you'll look shifty to me holy jeremiah i need time for that later you want to keep this nice and legal you ever see them before no and what are they doing on your boat i not know i do not know well you better start remembering my husband speaks the truth yeah he has not seen the binoculars i bought them a gift for his birthday a likely yard but i speak the truth i swear it you can ask the man at the store which star at sag point oh sure she went all the way to the mainland to buy him a gift yeah what's he gonna work at him with lady sardines [Music] calling the blue chip come in blue chip over this is david on blue chip go ahead jeff over hello david this is jeff listen there's trouble at teapot bay and we need you where are you now over not far we're on our way stole as long as you can over and out right [Music] i want to ask you some questions kenneth a lot of chris who is with all right who is with [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign all right candace who is with you let's hear it now come on just a little unofficial investigation scott seems like your friend here visited jeremiah pierce's house last night without no invitation you sure that you don't think i'd act without evidence do you whatever it is show them jeremiah your friend figured to use them hunting sardines teddy bring that box over here [Music] what chaos jeremiah so is everything else in this box everything that was on the list item for item now wait a minute how'd you find i find the stolen property i didn't the state police did and the men who stole it they were arrested this afternoon well i guess maybe the woman was telling the truth about the binoculars looks like we acted a bit hasty yes we made a mistake yeah you figured fear and hate were substitutes for evidence and due process of law 24 hours ago there hadn't been a major crime committed on scott island for years now the robbery is just a drop in a hurricane unwarranted search and seizure false arrest assault if i hadn't gotten here in time maybe murder yeah things have changed on scott island all right there's not these people here on teapot bay who've done the changing it seems like the lawless ones the undesirable elements of the folk i've known all my life the ones i used to be proud to call my friends come on danny let's get up where's daddy it went down below hey [Music] get it yes i uh guess we owe you an apology ah does not matter i guess we owe you more than that the least we can do is fix up your boat i think you will take up a collection and not just to fix up your boat but to build a decent town here at teapot bay a place where you and your people yes where you and your people can come every season place where you belong please it will not be necessary it ain't necessary maybe but we figure it's right and proper jake here's gonna start it off 500 about right jake do i have a choice not in his world okay 500. hold on jake contribution's fine as far as it goes that's got nothing to do with the law you got some answering to do to the law any law against being a civic-minded citizen against doing your duty as you see it nope not unless you start interfering with other folks rights it ain't what you do jake it's how law ain't no respecter personalities guess you better come along louis candace and his friends are scott islanders now just like the rest of us and the new town of teapot bay is going to be one of the proudest points of interest we've got a kind of permanent reminder that freedom and justice serve any man only when they serve all men [Music] so you
