[Music] the wies spring relay has many advantages when compared to general purpose relays of former design outstanding amongst these advantages are fewer open contacts due to dust because each wies spring relay is protected by a transparent plastic contact cover this cover should be removed only when absolutely necessary it must be removed of course when testing for circuit or wiring troubles and when making certain adjustments there are only two major adjustments that may be required when the relay is in trouble balancing spring tension and contact separation the adjusting procedures are covered in the a series of the Bell System practices they should be followed carefully let's watch this repair man adjust the balancing spring he has checked the amateur back tension and found it below minimum test requirements first the blocking tool is inserted this new tool was developed just for the wire spring relay then with the balancing spring lifter the legs of the spring are disengaged from the card the spring lifter is inserted next to the upper leg of the balancing spring just behind the comb the end of the lift is rolled under the leg of the spring so that the spring rests in the groove of the lifter the lifter is now drawn forward and an orange stick is used to hold the card while the spring is lifted off the card the lower leg of the spring is removed in the same way except that the opposite end of the spring lifter is used the tool is rolled over the top edge of the leg the 70j gauge is used to check the tension of the balancing spring legs the tip of the gauge is inserted between the two projections at the end of the spring which is then moved toward the right until it touches the edge of the card the gauge should be rotated like this and not like this a pushing movement will give an incorrect reading this is the right way approximately 35 G is the reading for the top leg of the spring if there is considerable difference between the tension and the legs the leg having the lower tension is adjusted until the two are approximately equal the lower leg shows a higher tension so the upper leg will have to be adjusted it is important to use the proper spring adjuster for the job the legs of the balancing spring are pre-tensioned and no attempt should be made to remove the bend as this will destroy the adjustment for the same reason the spring adjuster should not be slid or drawn over the bend the tool is placed just in back of the two projections at the end of the leg by sliding the adjusting tool back back until the insulation on the handle is at the end of the spring the end of the tool will be at the right spot the spring is bent to the left to increase the tension the adjustment is made only in that part of the spring which is in front of the pre-tension bend we'll do that again pressure toward the contact spring should be maintained to avoid distorting the portion of the spring to the rear of the bend if the requirements are not met after adjusting the tension in one leg adjustments should be made to increase the tension in both legs but do not adjust more than necessary because repeated adjustments May injure the spring also tilting of the balancing spring should be avoided if the spring is tilted as in this case it will not engage the card properly the upper leg of the spring as well as the lower leg is then replaced on the card again the proper end of the tool is used used for the individual spring leg a test for armateur back tension is the next step the blocking tool is removed then the 70j gauge is used with the tip of the gauge appli to the tip of the ameter the minimum test requirements for rometra back tension as outlined in the practices have been met now here's a relay that needs adjustment of contact gauging or follow the correct procedure is perhaps best understood by looking at the component parts you see here how the fixed spring assembly is supported on the ends of the arms of the core plate any bending of these arms to the right or to the left will cause a corresponding movement of the fixed spring assembly for instance if the upper arm is bent like this the spring assembly will adjust itself in the same direction to facilitate such adjustments the core plate is equipped with these two slots with an H cabinet screwdriver inserted in the upper slot a clockwise motion moves the spring assembly until the separation between the contacts meets the requirements this is checked by inserting the proper gauge and energizing the relay an orange stick placed against the tips of the Springs of certain make contacts should show observable movement to indicate that the contact adjustment is satisfactory in this case the test requires the use of two different gauges and it is important that the correct procedure is followed as outlined in the practices the protective contact cover should now be replaced now for the buffer spring adjustment we are going to demonstrate the correct procedure on a relay equipped with a cross talk Shield this Shield must first be removed it is grasped with a pair of long noosed pliers and the spring of The Shield is pushed aside the cross talk Shield is applied only to relays whose coils are in talking circuits and where there is the possibility of cross talk between such relays now we can go to work on the buffer spring which is provided on certain relays to AIT in meeting release electric requirements on this relay the buffer spring is out of position as its use was not required previously in order to reposition the spring the necessary adjustment is made with the number 363 spring adjuster this slotter tool is placed on the middle of the operating lug of the buffer spring bend the lug as required but remember repeated bending May injure the lug so keep adjustments to a minimum now the position of the buffer spring needs to be checked this is done with the proper thickness gauge the gauge is inserted in the Armature Gap and the relay is energized movement of the spring as specified in the practices indicates whether its position is correct the tension of the buffer spring is changed with a proper spring adjuster Slide the adjusting tool back to the spool head now to increase the tension bend the leg of the spring toward the left obtain the necessary tension gradually to avoid kinking the spring also distribute the tension evenly between the upper and lower legs when this is done the buffer spring will be approximately parallel to the edge of the core plate now the tension is checked with the 70j gauge applied adjacent to the operating log the spring position should then be given a final check because of the design of the wies spring contacts test clips should never be connected to them a special cover is available for such occasions it has holes that line up with the fixed contacts and into which special test connectors can be inserted the test connectors are equipped with spring tips inserted through the holes they ensure firm contact this enables the maintenance man to make tests on Associated apparatus such as Polar relays that do not have terminal appearances on the front of the frame this test cover like the regular contact cover not only helps to keep dirt off the contacts but protects the contact Springs in other ways too for instance without the cover the gentle brushing of a shirt sleeve or a coat as a person passes by an unprotected relay may cause considerable trouble now to the Casual Observer this relay doesn't look any different than a before in fact look real close and it still doesn't look much different and yet these two movable contact Springs are crossed this view shows clearly what happened when the shirt sleeve brushed across the relay extreme care must be used to keep the movable Springs in their proper positions making sure that the cover is on at all times is the best way of avoiding trouble and of course the same principles of Maintenance apply to the wire spring relays as they do to other relays as long as they're operating properly leave them alone but if adjustments are required do the job
