Description: Pictures the common techniques of volumetric analysis, using as an example the preparation of a sodium hydroxide solution and its standardization with potassium acid phthalate (KHP). Steps shown include preparation of a .01 normal sodium hydroxide by dilution of carbonate-free, saturated sodium hydroxide; preparation of a saturated KHP solution using a volumetric flask; the pipeting of an aliquot of standard KHP solution; and the contrasting of the drainage of clean and dirty pipets emphasizes the need for learning proper pipet cleaning techniques, which are presented. The actual titration of the aliquot of KHP with sodium hydroxide is shown in the color sequence and techniques highlighted in titration are the proper use of the buret, rinsing and filling of it, reading parallax compensations, and the approach to and arrival at the phenolphthalein end-point.
