A study of American and Russian attempts to reach the moon that emphasizes the physics and reasons for the effort. It begins with a review of man's age-old striving to go to the moon, indicating how scientific curiosity and national rivalries have spurred it on. Most of the film is devoted to the Apollo project, including all the stages necessary for the historic Apollo II flight that placed the first man on the lunar surface up to the last project, Apollo 17.
