Tales Of Hoffmann

Offenbach was working on this fantasy opera at the time of his death. The story deals with successive loves of the poet Hoffmann for a mechanical doll, a courtesan, and a tubercular singer. The stories are linked by the reappearances of Hoffman's evil genius in various reincarnations. This role is undertaken by Malcolm Rivers in the film. The "Doll's Song" in Act 1 and "Barcarolle" in Act II are often considered a highlight in opera. Abridged English language version.
