TAKE OFFS AND LANDINGS PART 1: THE TAKE OFF

Description: This WWII training film takes a look at the procedure for a proper take off in accordance with the US Army Air Force. It follows a narrative of a bushy eyed pilot in training as he takes his first flight with his instructor as well as his first solo take off. It is an Official Training Film of the War Department (:11) and was produced by the 1st Motion Picture Unit (:22). It opens with the fresh pilot, Mr. Blake as he distractedly bumps into peers while watching another plane take off and fly over the air field (1:11). His peers jokingly mention Mr. Blake was eager to learn everything in a day and head out to Berlin tomorrow as this was filmed during the second world war. He then nearly backs into his instructor who informs him he will be flying a Vultee BT-13 Valiant; which was the basic trainer aircraft used during WW2 (1:54). The BT-13 had a 450-horsepower engine and it’s rudders, trim tabs, and variable pitch propeller are pointed to (2:22). As Mr. Blake is about to jump into the cockpit, the instructor stops him to check the baggage compartment (2:27) and the gas tank as the gas gauge may be incorrect (2:41). The pair then climb into the plane (3:25) and the instructor will walk Mr. Blake through the entire process. Some of this includes the plugging in of the headset, fastening seat belt (3:35), unlocking controls and adjusting his seat and rider pedals (3:43) as well as setting the altimeter (4:04) and raising the flaps (4:07). It is best practice to start on the fullest tank (4:24) and to keep both of the tanks within ten gallons of one another (4:24). A control check and instrument check both must be conducted prior to starting the engine (4:37) and a second check is to follow after it has been started (4:42). Mr. Blake then adjusts the throttle (4:57), turns the ignition switch on and begins to build up fuel pressure to drive the engine (5:08). As the engine kicks on the propellers begin spinning (5:27). Regardless of the parking brake being set, the instructor informs him he must keep his feet on the brakes while the engine is running (5:52). Mr. Blake then radios the control tower that they are preparing to take off (6:04). Other planes on the airfield begin moving forward and the pair nearly knocks into another plane demonstrating it is vital to keep eyes moving around the field (7:33). He is told to use the rudder for turns and never the brakes unless necessary (7:46). Preparing for takeoff, he stops just short of the take off lane at a 45-degree angle (8:05). Another check of the instruments ensues (8:11). In order to counter act torque from the engine which pulls the nose to the right or the left, two points are chosen in the foreground to balance the nose between (6:57). The throttle is used to clear the engine after it has been idling for any amount of time (10:12). The flaps are rolled down (10:57) and the throttle is opened slowly (11:16). Once having reached the shallow climbing altitude (11:53) the plane begins to lift itself from the runway (12:19). Mr. Blake then levels off to gain speed (12:28). The plane climbs higher and passes 150 feet in the air (13:00). The new pilot then takes his first 90-degree turn (13:05) and then another (13:26). The flaps are rolled up and he adjusts the throttle for cruising rpm (14:13). After they land (14:47), the instructor asks Mr. Blake if he had remembered everything to which Mr. Blake replies with the important things (16:04). The instructor takes him from the plane and re-goes over the entire process as all of the points are important (16:37). The day then comes when Mr. Blake gets to do his first solo take off (19:27). He narrates each of the points learned as he goes through the process of the checks and preparations for take-off (20:45). In flight he conducts the same maneuvers as he had done with his instructor (22:58). At the end of the film, just prior to conclusion the new pilot, still in the air, says he had remembered everything and there was nothing to worry about, except for the landing (24:26) insinuating there is a second part of the training film which will specifically look at landing procedures (24:26). The Vultee BT-13 Valiant was a WWII-era basic (a category between primary and advanced) trainer aircraft built by Vultee Aircraft for the U.S. Army Air Corps, and later U.S. Army Air Forces. A subsequent variant of the BT-13 in USAAC/USAAF service was known as the BT-15 Valiant, while an identical version for the US Navy was known as the SNV and was used to train naval aviators for the Navy and its sister services, the Marine Corps and Coast Guard.

learn you've got more juice 450 horse and you have almost the same flight is that you'll find in one form or another and combat ships rudder and elevator trim tabs radio and in the latest models they have recognition lights here on the belly wing flaps you also have a variable pitch propeller wait a minute you're not going to forget to check your baggage compartment I yeah that's it see if there's nothing in there that might break loose and follow your controls I'll go check your gas that's a very necessary precaution because your gas gauge might not always be correct you might find yourself without any gas when you needed it the most that would be bad all right now the trim tabs the wing flaps particularly the variable pitch propeller all these things make a difference they make it a whole lot easier don't they sir they certainly do but I'd assume give a baby a razor to play with it let you take off before you know how to use them right properly handle they're a terrific help but in careless hands mister they can be bad medicine I know through you told me yesterday and I'm going to pound it at you every day all right plug in your headset fasten your safety belt unlock your controls judges seat near rider pedals check form 1a and fill out form 1 let your altimeter roll up your flaps grandpa take off - sure you're on the proper gas tank start on the fullest tank but keep both tanks within 10 gallons of each other during the day if both tanks are full start on the right tank check all your controls before you start the engine check all your instruments after your engines running and recheck them before you take off got to make a habit of that recheck if you want to be an army pilot and if you want to stay healthy I'll show you what it wear to make it open mixed you adjust your throttle turn on your switch which off build up your fuel pressure driving it keep your fuel pressure off and energize [Music] we're engaged radio on Gesser change of prop pitch to high rpm but not until the oil pressure is simpler check your radio while you're warming up your engine but keep your feet on the brakes don't ever trust your parking brakes while your engines individually these are not grabbing and they're working properly always packed they would flaps up otherwise temple ticket couple damage if you're headed eyes moving remember you're heading to Claire of the takeoff plane never on it unless you're ready to go here's where you make that double check see that your props in high rpm if it's not you can't turn up enough rpm to develop maximum horsepower and without maximum horsepower you won't get off the back maybe not even at all on your field understand that oh yes sir sure you do if your props not in high rpm you practically flew to the ground so check in and your mixture control and that's a must - it's got to be full rich or you won't get enough fuel for full power maybe not even enough to keep going also check to see that you're taking off on the proper gas tank and be darn sure your trims has to set properly if you forget and they should be off even a little bit you'll have to pull against and it could be like having a tug of war with the Navy back field so remember they've got to be properly adjusted all these checks are insurance against accidents maybe bad accident and you want to make these checks as much as possible by field every time you bury your head in the cockpit you're inviting trouble did you get all that yes sir what did I say laughs you uh you were just mentioning insurance sir and you'll need insurance mister if you ever forget any one of these points yes sir do we take off now sir first you relax as I was saying skip anything at this point it means trouble later ever hear of torque yes sir well think about it now and every time you get set to take off remember torque pulls the ship to the left you have to counteract it by pressure on the right rudder enough to keep the nose straight and to help do this pick yourself a couple of guide points one on each side say that Derek and that's tall chimney see him look at the mirror second now if your nose goes off course that much either way corrected with rudder repeatedly or you could ground loop just like that now you take off that right there oh if you've been idling for any length of time your engine loads up and you have to open your throttle to clear it otherwise it might come out on you you've also got to check your mags at 1500 rpm but you can do both these things at the same time now last but not least in the vaulty valiant it was roll down 20 degrees of plant but you do this after you've checked your mags and cleared your engine otherwise rocks kicked up by the propwash might damage your flaps okay follow through on the controls keep your head and eyes moving don't forget torque watch your nose on the horizon tell you what you're doing when you see you're clear open your throttle gradually smoothly swing into line parallel to the tee [Music] quiet now you're gaining speed cleanse level no straight right between your guide points you're easing forward pressure on the stick bringing the tail up until you're in shallow climb attitude there you're holding it there notice the torque pulling the nose to the left bring it back by applying right rudder pressure if it should swing over to the right he's off some of the pressure you're holding it holding and the ships lifting itself off you don't pull it off it lifts itself and they're stalling speed not good for climbing now you're leveling off to gain plenty of flying speed leveling off helps you get that speed and at the same time lets you your throttle for normal climbing rpm keeping the engine running away you're holding straighten level did you get plenty of air speed before starting your client now you've got it so you're using black rice realistic to bring it up to normal climbing attitude then you're climbing over 150 feet long so and I want you to get one definite procedure in your mind so you won't forget anything no say you're in a plane taxing up you're checking your brakes you're guessing using rudder rudder only you're looking around you all the time and you stop at a 45 degree angle for the take our plane make that double check often high rpm mix to control full rich gas switch on proper tank and trim set set properly you're checking your mags at 1500 rpm and at the same time clearing your engine for takeoff roll down 20 degrees of flaps still looking around you see you're clear and you're turning into the takeoff plane parallel to the tee picking up your guide points opening your throttle gradually smoothly holding the ship in a straight line gaining speed now you're easing forward pressure on the stick bringing your tail up into shallow climb attitude now I'm thinking about torque and remembering to counteract it with sufficient right rudder that's right whenever torque tends to pull your nose to the left bring it back with extra pressure on the right rudder of course too much pressure will pull your nose to the right if this happens ease it off a little oh you're holding your attitude holding it holding and the plane is lifting itself off you want to remember that you do not pull the ship off in normal takeoff it's designed to lift itself but and get this it lifts itself off just above stalling speed so don't try to climb as soon as you feel it lifting because mister speed near stalling speeds no good for climbing she's lifting she's up and you're leveling off to get plenty of flying speed at the same time you're reducing your throttle to normal climbing rpm to keep the engine from running away when you're leveled off you can do this and at the same time pick up flying speed now you have sufficient flying speed so you're easing back pressure on the stick and you're climbing now you're above 150 feet you're checking behind you and making United degree turn with traffic you're straightening out again checking behind you can make United degree turn out of traffic in leveling off for cruising you're climbing about a hundred feet above your cruising altitude then easing forward on your stick and changing a prop to low rpm rolling up your flats gradually losing your excess altitude and picking up speed as you do so you're trimming the shift straight and level flight the ship gathers speed easing back on the throttle so it's not to exceed cruising rpm and making the final adjustments on your trim tab and that's it get help any a lot sir I'm sure I know all the points now oh that's fine you can take it up all by yourself report very long [Music] I'll be watching you remember everything I've been teaching you the last few days every word sure now level off to get sufficient flying speed reduce the throttle to normal climbing bar p.m. now let's stick alleys back on you and I'm climbing now I'm looking around making my first 90 degree turn with traffic nice ooh medium turn that's it now we straighten her up good now I look around make a 90-degree turn out of traffic nein easy medium turn that's it well here I am at the right house - what a pushover change the prop to low rpm roll up my flaps send the ship a straight and level flight adjust throttle for cruising rpm adjust next to control for best power and re trim my ship for
