Swedish peasant paintings

Description: A study of the “gourd” paintings done by the itinerant peasant artists who flourished in the Dalecarlia district of Sweden in the eighteenth century. The scenes usually have a religious content, although floral motifs are frequently used. The diea of the gourd as the symbol of life is taken from the Book of Jonah and recurs throughout these domestic paintings.
