e lc2 the one with the tick slips uh the one with about a minute of tick slip okay okay what's our range limit on that I believe it's about 360 ft or so okay Bri eyes Space Telescope Capt a firm handshake with Mr Hud's telescope we copy that c and there are Smiles Gore down here it's quite a sight we can't wait to see we are in drift mode and Sun point is disabled okay and we see that copy fight we see that and just for the benefit of the Rendevous Folks up there your prop margins were well within what we predicted uh great work up there you [Applause] [Music] guys flight pays go ahead we have uh we've lost PDI DEC lock completely now light we see Claud correcting for attitude at the hover position X Y and Z look good copy 3 go to the lower [Applause] left [Applause] okay I'm not going to touch the seal inside of the seal looks good just moving across the equator on the uh Northwest to Southeast swing on the 4 third orbit of the mission the crew well into the uh first task of the day which is to change out two of the three rate sensor units each rate sensor unit is comprised of two gyro uh gyroscopes okay so let's I guess go up to the very top one Jeff bring it out to the hard stop with the ESS I really want to see is if I can and we're going to try that okay press on if you've got a way to do it do it all right okay you got the handle Bol there another [Applause] f look like a bird look at it if I can still see it go back behind [Applause] us [Applause] happy store yes sir one we are looking back uh Jeff at the tail the orbit is 12:00 the sun's at about 11:00 yeah but you you see what happens when I move over to the left Roger Sun's hting right on the uh starboard side of HSP okay that's a good height keep coming in okay story you you happy okay quad let's move back move away okay move away okay let's Okay stop I have a hand on the telescope I have a hand on the handh hold let me bring my rail in I'm in 2 in I'm in 2 Ines just do it see what it's like pushing it in a little bit more uh okay now I'm looking at the top DBA fly why DBA clear a real business in there coming out by a foot and a half you are clear to I'd rather have a little p help me get on it I I'll move the the port for you story I want to be centered okay okay good me I'm on it okay keep it coming we're going in the entrance just keep it coming [Applause] go to the outside meiz a board Endeavor uh Tom Acres and Kathy thoron in the process of installing the new instrument the co-star corrective optic Space Telescope axial replacement the do that's referred to as the Deployable Optical bench that is the Deployable Optics package that will be uh uh deployed a little bit later after installation too late stop just kind of finger tip at [Applause] KT better two and you level it out in KT you see that your left end down that's FL go Ahad uh HST is back into t format and uh 32 kilobits through the PDI yeah flight payloads all the payloads community has confirmed that the uh onboard computer is in good health and the payLo Community is in the process of checking out the new uh co-processor basically the upgrade to the computer which basically will give it some more memory and also uh make computational inputs much [Applause] faster and once inside the airlock and the hatch is closed the cabin atmosphere and the airlock will then be matched such that the inner hatch can be open and they can climb back inside and get out of their space [Applause] suits really [Applause] nice all [Applause] right andever you've got to go for release and I have your backup sunpoint timer in it time when you're ready to copy roger copy go for release and KT's ready to copy uh Pig of SE was one hour 0 minutes 22 [Applause] seconds copy 1 hour 0 minutes 22 seconds cby and we have to say that through your superb efforts you have really shown that NASA can do all that we promise to do and more and we very much appreciate it the Hubble Space Telescope has been released from the robot arm the Orbiter is in a low z separation maneuver away from the spacecraft that is to ensure that the Jets don't uh cause any plume impingement or uh Thruster fire ings toward the telescope as the Orbiter well I really expect it to look uh clean and bright and be a pretty healthy State I I don't really think that there's going to be any evidence of anything going wrong um there's been a lot of talk about the solar rays and in fact our analytical projections will show that we expect the uh supporting by stems to be bowed and not everybody knows this so uh some people see it for the first time they they may be surprised but we're not we're not surprised I we know that that's going to be the case so we hope it looks pretty much like it did on on the deployment Mission I really don't think we visually you'll be able to see anything most of the work we're doing is uh the flaws are microscopic in nature and Buri deep inside the telescope so we would't be able to see we expect to see a nice clean machineable yeah is the problem okay and and if you and and so this is the sun right so that's that's problem one the reverse Terminator there is no delta T because you're immersing it in cold there's nothing but albo I mean if you talk about albo but but there's a delta T because the two bands now have achieved an equilibrium temperature that's different no no no they basically it settles out it turns out it settles out at the same temperature yeah so the to cond oh yeah sure than the radi just it's just the time it takes to get there is the only problem um it about 5 minutes it equalizes the reason it pops later is there's rollers at the end that are Bal but still got to be a differential expansion between that and on the yeah but that's taken up by the rollers that's what the whole roller system is for the compensator system it's got uh um basically Springs at one end with pulley that expand the contract and at the other end it's got if a raor straight whe just leave no no I'll tell you what I'll tell you what if they're straight and there's no Jitter we should because we don't understand anything about engineering I don't disagree with you if they're straight we're going to do with pick on day two now sudden changing that's it change the plan no I I think I think I think if the Eraser or straight we also have an equal chance that there is no no such thing as spherical aberration the universe is aberrated and we're going to be correcting for actually all all the stars we've been looking at really are blur a good thing about they all have fuz being I I can remember when in 1973 I was with when I was with grma we were studying Space Telescope and I was the my job was to develop the manufacturing integration and test kind of flow of the thing and all that and and I always thought at that time you should have a backup mirror because if you ever got into environmental test and cracked the mirror because your suspension system it it took 3 years to build a new mirror always should have a backup and then then later on I became to understand the system and I said no the easier way was if the mirror correct you would convinced the world that the Universe was corrective now they corrected okay when we get some pictures here um as soon as they get into station keeping and uh about an hour or so before capture which will be about 2 hours to to Grapple but when get setting that's a little picture of our close transition what's the time now 2 we're in the we should be in the do right now the middle did that just getting ready to go the dark Pard me did that get updated for the new launch yes fantastic tell the crew to calm down they're too excited get a picture yeah right now only want a picture now you don't need the radar any right how do we know you're not out there while gagging around come on I want to see the proof oops HST Godard HST project I presume you all copied that that they just captured pictures radar they can't they got to get there hi Mike Jo Rothenberg okay what do you need yeah everything's fine yeah it doesn't go back until 6:00 in the morning no it's right here is that but it almost looks like it's that that's really going to look dramatic when it comes into sunlight Twisted look at that right yeah that looks spent yeah that's what I keep saying I keep pointing it is see it looks could be better for E that panel if you look at the bar coming outed and look at the bottom it looks Kil no no look on the left look at the left this one here right look at that angle versus the angle of the uh top of the right right yeah well so does the top right one it's hard to tell you know could be shortening but it does look like it's it could be bent out like this yeah there's no reason no reason to expect it might not be bent just the right edge of the cylinder of the PJ hey whites he on that uh if that doesn't look like a flattening you know you're picking up it looks like propeller blade yeah right I guess that proves why we want to change out the be interested to see what they do in the daylight that particular view doesn't show this Bo because it's in the plane of the that's right on the other hand about the same time Dave Dave's doing the briefing Sunday so she right after that and uh as early as you can in the morning for stop the King right I'll work a [Music] little it tonight looking for a good yes [Music] sir the real getting WI it's very important that these doors get closed uh there's a light seal all around the edge of the door was very important to keep stray light out of the optical scientific instrument into the telescope I I don't know whether it broke or whether it back out cuz I can't conect the pitch and the screw being the same as a [Music] b well it's not it's not a left hand going try putting it back together scre I don't know and it's probably a 32 pitch yeah and they put 23 footb on say there's a good chance it broke yeah but I didn't hear him describe this is this is the picture this is drawing out that screw that you see right there is threaded into that end of the bolt and of course when this is threaded out pressure screwed it right out um door still way to go God woo there's actually 10 fittings to U align in order to get the doors to close there's four of these VG guides and there's the four latches as well as two others uh one on the top and one on the bottom perpendicular it wasn't just the latches that we like the ones that we got from Tom there was also these VG guides that you had to align who designed that we do that and that'll be super day it's a super day so far would be no uh what we're going to do is hold off until about 6:30 and then does that mean this is okay since you and he [Music] talk bye byebye this is going to be national news too look at that that doesn't look too cred right now no it doesn't like a it's a see it there's the infamous King wait a second it's got a message to Mars Observer cover Time Magazine it how's it going from your point of view back here wonderfully I mean I just hope it keeps going at this uh this rate um if we can have another Eva day like we did the first uh and it looks like we're halfway there uh we'll be well on our way to having to come very very successfully uh uh completed mission in fact I remember after the first day saying that if we could just have two more like today we'd be sure of Great Signs yeah so uh it looks [Music] great [Music] I mean it's it's on it's g i have no idea how many molecules that [Music] represents [Music] imag who's going John who [Music] very overi of 5 hours the other aspect that people probably don't think about or realize so much is that you're meally fatique when you come inside with Space Walk also because to to show when the array is in the L okay yeah so so it's seated ready to latch right right so I uh made recommendation to the locker engineers and discussed it with them you know years ago and they invented this uh little modification if you like and uh what what it what it is is it's a means of protecting the micro switches as the array is installed but it's got two positions it's got a a back position and a forward position yeah and uh how can the micros switch operate with that in place if it's in one of these positions well I think it's I'm not sure if they're still functioning but it certainly protects them a boot [Music] stick stop about a minute and this is uh well doesn't make much difference I don't think cuz that door has a hole about 2 in around yeah but if you open it yeah it is a million times larger yeah know or something [Music] 10,000 oh yeah that's cop you know why they have to um bend the arrays to put them in here is because they didn't in the in the carriers because it did all of the work with the uh analysis work with the with the arrays in this configuration because this is the launch configuration mhm and uh they didn't want to redo the analysis and redo the work for this particular carrier I don't know they should all it could happen is that they wouldn't that they didn't right how long have you been involved in this project I've been involved in this prob for about 18 years now time time healed absolutely why didn't take long for us to heal but uh it was a a lot of of work to make it work had a good how it how does it feel seeing these repairs being made now is it sleep it's outstanding it's absolutely fantastic you see that how professional they are how everything is coming together and I was certainly look forward to a successful completion of this Mission so we can uh begin to our sence put upside down two days one of the reporters one of the reporters asked the question well what does this do for the for the Milkman in Milwaukee and uh it wasn't it wasn't me that the question was asked of and the answer uh was BAS basically that the Milkman Milwaukee and all the rest of us learned about the universe in a way that we couldn't learn without public Space Telescope that's that's really it's a little hard to uh to tell a guy that that what he's doing is directly related to uh uh to to space on the other hand the more we understand space the better we can understand our world and how how best to take advantage of the limited resources we have in our world congratulations on your [Applause] [Music] Rob have we settled in on that power thing yet or is Kelly still fussing current [Music] still does that you think that'll slow them down not sure I'm just they've been 50 minutes ahead now for a long time 40 minutes about half an hour ago yeah they're picking up 10 minutes they're doing good yeah they get that thing on the rails all the time in the rad just keep those rails Tom can I have a pretzel please thank you something in there thank you Jan J PA no you're you're seeing the arm in the in the part of it see the arms in the way you can't see the front part of the site that's where coar is actually it looks like it's moving to me that's that's because the top of the Whi pick site lays back over there so it could be moving somebody bumped it's flapping in the Solar yeah all right let's do it fellas it's just like sliding a big drawer in one guy inside just don't want to hang up just don't want to get C right that's fine those micro switches aren't that precise oh so we're engaged that's the important part we are engag 23 turns good procedure team just go do the white glow test on it we all agree to that I vote for seeing I think it would be really interesting to get the Builders out oh I think it's critical I already told him or four times no no no we remember we Remembered in the gist we wouldn't thr but uh those funters have undoubtedly changed in orbit go ahead and we need [Music] yes I just want to make sure we do start com the blind did he move [Music] over after the coming up yeah the idea is they make sure they don't have a and then we turn on after after the ground then we power up bet you there'll be some shares in the stock if that thing comes up CLE on the talking about it's just that just remember when the power comes on the 2 and 1/2 year warranty starts when do we know we have a talk back this aliveness test tells us we got a well the aliveness test and and then the functional hours later yeah well we know we know we got a plug we know we don't have any shorts and things like that for the test oh well let me be the first thing thank you for all the work thank you it's working see right here so John was it worth all the hassles I gave you for the last eight years I told you it'd be worth it well it's not it's not over to the fat lady things John got to take that first image right yeah that's what we talking about yeah when we have a good idea on the functional test results of the functional work okay okay when will that occur do you know 10:30 a.m. that's what is it's a.m. okay so that's 10:30 a.m. our time uh to to today Tuesday Tuesday who knows you must be Tuesday okay yeah no congratulations to you John we we only try to cancel you a couple times yeah well John you deserve a tug when I see you next time all right uh Joe Joe Rothenberg wants to say something to you and I'll I'll catch up with you uh when uh when Dave and I and everybody gets back next week must have it must have failed must have failed along the edges and the whole thing just kind of off the sides are more like a heavy aluminum foil so it's not very strong it's probably easy to peel it off must have fractured on seams because it's going to come way in whole pieces right he said it had markings on he said it had a y and a z if you look at that you can see the Y and Z see [Music] sounds and there's silk sprain onto the paint and it sounds like that came off as a whole piece the sil screen on the paint just came off of the aluminum surface of the housing the aluminum housing is one piece very thin and there's there's a foam inside it's pot in so the the crew put it in the trash bag they're going to take it into the cabin with them and they're going to show it to us on the down link but the the aluminum cover is still on we don't know oh you don't know that we can't tell from the pictures we have right now because of the glare they took ESC shots and they're down linking them and we're going to go get the high quality we use we won't need those pches I've got several places we we identified this pre-light in case something like this happen we could go grab blankets and [Music] covers this is like the mirror in the wide Fiel camera that's used to correct for the spherical aberration in the Hubble and it's done by putting the same air on this mirror that exists on the Hubble beor only with the opposite sign so the result is that after having the the optical image distorted by the primary mirror the Distortion is removed by the secondary mirror and the result is that you get a good clear image the end one more look so the first level of concern is if there are other people that are going to come make sure second if it's the aluminum internal part of [Music] the how do you feel about the results uh today's war well it's uh three Evas in a row with uh great success so one half of you feels pretty good that the Evas have gone well but you still have to have some U reservations you know because uh we uh all we know about the Widefield camera right now is that uh the draw is current which is good it doesn't have any shorts or anything like that but we don't get the uh full functional test until uh 10:00 this morning 5 hours from now so uh that'll tell us whether it functions as a camera but even that won't tell us if it fixes the flaw in the mirror we won't know that for 6 or eight weeks so uh I guess we can wait but obviously these are major steps forward I mean right now we have a camera in the telescope that uh potentially will fix half half of the SP collaboration problem in the sense that'll enable half of the science that we haven't been able to do to be done at the end of the Eva you're feeling pretty good then when you get home and start lying in bed looking up at the ceiling not being able to sleep you start thinking about the problems that might occur the next day so it's it's like a sine wave up and down up and down hopefully the uh function will end on the up note in about two or 3 days it's somewhat like those Blobs of light down those strong SE two H but with the corrected Hub uh we're we're going to go back and look at that again and we think we have a good chance of resolving the tail and bringing out what there in these much more distant galaxies so now we'll be looking at Epoch 7 to 10 billion years ago and and so and then that's the way it works you see you you HBL a Time put your uh compound in there youch so you've got something that's going to adhere to the box and then if you were to take the size off you'd see the adhesive and you know remnant of Thea systems manager record uh it's IND 20 right now yes we're having that tiger where's the interace of what what they put the crew put on this is the old yet I think first and foremost on everyone's mind is that we still have a long way to go we've got two space walks one which we're about an hour away from beginning the fourth one uh that lie ahead as well as the uh reboost of the telescope the deploy of it and then bringing in De in the crew safely home uh everyone is pleased with the success that we've had so far and I think it's given every body a reassurance and we've hit our Rhythm uh reassurance that the flexibility that was built into this flight in the uh planning and training and uh in the operation of it uh was right on target but we still have a long way to go and everyone first and foremost is taking things one day at a [Music] time the black area was the opal yeah you're right [Music] uhoh got an optically fixed Observatory guys let me shake your hand all right W yes congratulations all does it again huh yeah natural natural now when is your warranty start compl okay and we we start charging for power now as we told Larry Simmons Fant we've got an optically fixed Observatory well can we go home now yellow so this fantastic with the we don't have all the instruments well I have to keep waiting to wake up they told me orb was bling two more days except for the they struggling with the door on the first Eva there has been another single identifiable problem that wasn't much of a problem either just getting I know I have time closing my car's door sometimes really great yeah yeah we've lost it the functional test we deploy It 2 in yeah and that that takes place while the crew is is asleep I'll have to look at the Smith to get the exact time remember it uh it's an it's an hour and a half test but it's a pretty good test it um it checks heaters and power relays commands but it also checks the Tilt sensors and the do straing gauge does actually move the do2 how do you feel at this point I think I've rounded third base and I'm starting my slide into home plate for the inside the park home run we've hit on this this Mission it's just a tremendous thrill uh to have gotten whp two in yesterday and co-star in successfully today and uh to find ourselves now in the position that we have a complete Observatory uh we still have to do all the optical work to align these instruments and check them out fully to make sure they're going to do everything they're supposed to do but right now it's looking very very good that we've accomplished uh all we needed to accomplish for the optical correction of of HST and that's uh that's good news for astronomy and it's good news for NASA uh to get over this little episode in our history be inside the cavity that the door is covering but in in the uh the engineer that designed Hubble in anticipation of Eva tasks has have uh mounted the uh the units the electronics in many cases on the inside of the door so when the door is opened the electronics swing out and are presented directly to the Eva crew member thus making access a little bit easier and and story was mentioning uh the black box that he's currently changing out the the solar array Drive Electronics unit the first one uh in this case there's a connector electronic connector much like a a a uh an rs232 connector is connected to a computer that is close to the uh door side of the box and he is having trouble getting the little tool on there having access to it so what he's about to do is is then uh unmount the electronics box from the door and then he can get his hand fully around the connector and demate it from from the [Music] box [Music] three only three put some more inst in this baby Hey Joe we've opened all three sets [Music] of lot of TV come on don't do that this must be well if story weren't outside I'd say this is him operating the camera exploratory nature oh there it is oh they get that's coverage coverage somehow we've been here they're just limit straps and you can see the Springs are very much smaller now look at those thermal shields on the B stems I like that hey yes the B St sure look different yes I think it's a new color scheme too isn't it D aren't these a little sign yes yeah that's all we need to do about one maybe the one you had it deploy no no we want to keep you in suspend which one is this the minus or the plusus uh they used to do minus first but I'm not sure you can't you know the hold is under the SP did I hear a call that they were getting current on the spot fact I like your uh presentation yesterday on the TV uh I saw you on CNN thank you thank you well I think um I think we may have a bit of a future now we have to make sure that it's brand new telescope everything has been changed more you be sure you understand it yes absolutely well and we've got to get we've got to get the Optics aligned and get some images and that's the final step really to to have gone the wless way is only the Asom but NASA success this has gotten so much attention in the public it's just amazing and congratulations well thank you this is a really it's incredible you know it's almost out ages the success one after the other everything worked the first time and and we had one we thought we had a problem this afternoon and even that went away after a few hours it was it was a miracle pardon me there's some place in the system we had a Trent a short uh I'm sure it'll bite us as a relay faure later but there's nothing we can do about and we'll work around it at some point yeah I mean I I suspect it maybe another one that's trim relays and uh this is the same signature and if it is uh three out of 18 is not going to hurt us even if they were all in the same Spa wouldn't hurt us we have two two isolators they one that OCC days ago yeah they they're unrelated they isolated that very specifically to the spa to a short on the spa that was a voltage Spike think to the they believe that there was wire shorting destructure on the spa that had been previously damaged that was separate and they believe that thing is now an orbit separately at the other array it was the problem was jettison with the array right yeah we got third on pick so we've got we' got another 90 minutes with no problem at all so very minimal impact anybody anyes we haven't seen thiss But B P I don't know if we can isolate it to something like the Sol R is causing it or the savy or whatever the co-processor it could be any of those then at least we can have them check to make sure that all the connections are proper there's no bent pins there's no crimped wires you can't do that once you're deployed I don't know that we want to do that but you know [Music] that's they thinking about coming back a day early I know that was [Music] well that's the thought at the moment but they're not through looking at they switched to the B sat and dark and uh spend 5 minutes there and switch back and now they're discussing the day looks looks clean they're discussing whether the switch back over being long to stay on it whether or not we need to look more dat before we deploy go thank you very congratulations to go super thanks Joe thank you actually I'm good job that's great congratulations thanks thanks good job great job guys great job we got some actually it's kind of good that everybody is Right Moving how do you how do you feel seeing a telescope move all kind of SP I'm absolutely breathless um it's the most visually beautiful thing I think I've ever seen and it makes me think of what the near future is going to hold for us and for astronomy it makes me really proud of of NASA and really proud of this country to to actually be able to create something like this that's so special and unique in the history of being you're welcome
