Description: Discusses ways in which structural changes have taught us to understand how the different chromosome configurations in various Drosophila species have come about, especially through whole-arm translocations and pericentric inversions. Emphasizes the fact that because of structural changes a number of discoveries were made possible with regard to gene arrangement, the centromere, telomeres, heterochromatin, gene dosage changes, and position effects. Considers the relationship among the types of tissue treated, the dose and rate of radiation exposure, and the number and consequences of induced structural changes. Lecture given by Dr. H. J. Muller.
