newscast this is Rick Koch eat our director our audio man is John rabe we are in V control at woi TV and we've just shown you how television program starts because that's been one of the things that we've done with stringers newscast we've been very open and aboveboard about the fact that this is an unusual program it's a program that you have produced at least those of you who have shot super 8 film and 16 millimeter film and have sent it to us this is the seventieth program in the series and it is the last of the regularly scheduled ones we may do some specials but in essence this has been a unique experiment because we have relied on the members of the audience to produce the segment's for the program and thanks to you these are some of the places we've gone the things that we've seen and the people we've met rolled PVC member Stringer's has been a marvelous show to do it's been nerve-racking because we never knew what we were going to have for the next show because it all depends on what you shock and what you send us we were an unusual show in that we used film produced by amateurs by people like you who just took film and send it to us and because we used super 8 film but the program originally started because so many of you were shooting super 8 film and we were able to use it on the air we were never able to use regular 8 film but we did use super 8 and some of the things that you sent were really remarkable and isn't amazing we had very few complaints from the from the beginning about the fact that some of the film was a little bit scratched some was a lot of focus now and then we didn't try to make it look like professional film by editing out all of those things we left them in because that's the way you sent them and we tried to leave them basically as they were do you realize that people from 125 different communities in Iowa sent us film they did and because of it we won the governor's media in the Arts Award and we're very proud of that we're proud of the fact that we were able to show different views of sent bicentennial activities in Iowa and that's when the show originally started anyway we have more things for you to see and some tips on your own photography which will show you when singers newscast continues - through my class here my role BPRD commercial hey black Baldy do and I secure the Iowa Arts Council has been very very active in promoting photography and developing it as an art form we think that you will benefit from watching this film on animation it's excellent it's from the yellow ball workshop testing one two three the yellow ball workshop is a place where people of all ages come to make animated films Jean Falcone is working on a face which will be animated the first step is to paint a face on a sheet of paper Jean uses felt pens and posed to paint the face is large and the background is simple this is a lady sleeping on a pillow when she was sleeping a bird flew in the window and made a nest on her bed she opened her eyes and looked around and then she says oh my goodness what's a bird doing in my room Jean is one of the youngest members of the class whose ages range from 80 to 18 there are a maximum of 12 students in a class of mixed ages and experience some are new students like Jean some are second and third-year students who are working on more complex themes and techniques Jean has painted the lady with closed eyelids the open eyes and eyeballs are painted on a separate piece of paper cut out and laid on top the eyes can then be moved under the camera so that the lady seems to open her eyes and look around Paul Falcone has just taken 24 frames or pictures of the lady with their eyes closed when this is projected on a movie screen it will last for one second now the lady will open her eyes jean lanes the new eyes and eyeballs on top of the closed lids the lady will also raise their hands in front of her face and surprise Paul and gene rehearse the movement the separate open-mouthed are laid on top of the closed mouth when filming the mouths are changed every two frames and the hands move upward 1/4 inch every 2 frames a roll of developed film returns from the laboratory with scenes on it made by different students each student winds the new roll of film through the viewer and cuts out his own scene for splicing into his own role here is Gene's face scene Oh what's a booth doing in my house if the lighting is right all the activity can go on in one room some students are creating art and over in the left hand corner two students are filming a scene which uses special effects Carroll stones is working on her film just a fisherman of my imagination the main characters of the film are grotesque fish made out of human eyes and mouths cut out of magazines a sheet of glass with built up walls of plasticine is filled with water and breaks between the camera lens and the artwork each time the camera operator takes a few frames she Wiggles the water with her finger this gives the effect of an underwater scene cows director of the film but the other students in the class will help her film her scenes and make her soundtrack I'm going to check it out and see if it looks alright to you could you we Google water something yeah it looks really nice it looks let down I mean like we look animated or probably really move nicely this is three dimensional animation the camera shoots the action head-on instead of vertically Mimi Kravetz is acting as cameraman for her sister Amy who created this set with paper mache and wire the scene is the Garden of Eden the butterfly was supposed to flap its wings and fly into land on the flower first Amy tried to hang the butterfly from transparent fishing wire but she had a lot of trouble she I wanted it to be gently and flapping its wings but we couldn't find a balance point to accent stick this being dried up it you know it's made of wire the final solution was to fly the butterfly in on a blue rod which blended into the blue sky as soon as the butterfly had landed on the flower the rod could be removed Amy could wiggle the flower and get out of the way while meanie filmed the flower in motion Billy Fuchs helps Amy with the animation mock Mahoney is a quiet boy who makes films about racing cars and motorcycles come back here Punk I ain't through with you yet the students come to class once a week for two hours there are 25 sessions in these 50 hours the student has learned how to operate the film equipment and make a one-minute animated film animated films have traditionally been associated with humor but very personal films have also been made mock whiner and Larry Stern in their film the Enlightenment make a strong social comment about the futility of war and the persecution of the individual this guy he's a hippie and he does all these things and he feels like every for every buddy is against him because he's like this and they're telling him to conform and he can't take it really and he's getting lost and he feel it was kind of paranoia he doesn't you know what to do and eventually he conforms and that's his worst decision and we haven't decided not his fate yet um the way we're showing this is in the course scene we're having a whole crowd of people and they're all going to be talking but we're just showing him running away cut your hair if you get it wrong you played some of the climate three thank God some people plan their whole story first and then make the art and film the scenes Cathy or her and paints first to develop an interesting face a character then she makes an environment for the character and films him in that scene just the street scene but also people the people walking down the street and this man walks up stairs he's invertible he turns from one step to the next and going up and then he goes out through the doorway here and the rest of the people this man walks back and forth in front of the windows and this little boy who is the main character the son walks slowly across the street while these other people hurry by you know their head legs some stuff throughout taking a pot so now and then after this is you know seeing everybody in the entire street storyline develops week by week is the character has more adventures we often don't know how the story will end until the film is finished the cutout characters are usually hinged at the joints with tape and thread on the underside Cathy's characters are so small she decided to keep the arms and legs loose here is gene back at the editor he is going to remove her scene from the roll the beginning ahead of her scene is taped to the edge of our table the tail is dropped into a paper bag after she has cut out her own seen the roll must be spliced back together this is the work print or copy of her film preliminary editing is done on this work print are copy to save wear and tear on the original there are many different types of splices some use cement and others use tape the class uses this tape splicer for work prints because it is simple to operate and the splices do not break after going back and forth in the projector many times the two ends of the film are trimmed then the ends are butted together they do not overlap a piece of the tape is pressed on top and the handle is pressed down this cuts off the tape and punches sprocket hole through it the film is turned over and the action is repeated on the other side after the film's are edited the whole class works together to make the soundtracks on quarter-inch tape the sound and picture are made into a finished print with optical soundtrack at the lab let's look at Jeanne's film now what my backpack what the bass doing in my house it's a baby bread oh no I dropped it look what I found this morning in my bed you want to Pat it ah she feels soft you want people what are you doing with my baby sandy come back here film animation college students are also making films these days and there is an introductory film course in Iowa State University this is a 16 millimeter black-and-white film that they did about Marvel Comics Marvel Green Machine in a secret laboratory in an obscure College in Iowa the evil professor von schiller fected a method of cloning superhuman beings he's now working on a formula that will bring these beings under his complete control after much experimentation he has developed what he thinks is the perfect formula now all that remains is for him to test the formula on his clone satisfied that his quotient works for simple tasks professor sends his goons on a more difficult mission the professor is told the clones to bring back the first wimpy looking person they see unknowingly however the clones choose mild-mannered David bummer as their victim alias The Incredible Hulk once the clones bring their victim to the professor he decides to put them to one further test that is he wants to see if they will dish out physical punishment and he commands suddenly a change comes over bummer he becomes the Incredible Hulk in desperation the professor sends his clothes to do battle with the beam but they are no match for the Hulk a few minutes later plumber comes to his senses and realizes what he has done once again he has saved humanity from the terrible professor von schmohawk in case you're wondering the college students do their film 16-millimeter but they do it in black and white because cheater and here's one that's fun it was the first film we ever used from Tom Beals class and it's Grover sings the blues ooh bumpers things but what Grover sings the sloop athma right get it together Grover sings the lose Oh Grover sings the blues' I can really dig a little bit I am also yes I'm because I don't know enough about you I am we any business it is so that I can show how I care about you what of me all the times you see me on my own what did you pay that you think I'm happy alone I am sober and I'll keep on doing as what else can I do Hey yes that leave on til I'm closer to Grover sings the blues' and we say goodbye and we also say thank you very much for all the films that all of
