Running time: 01:24:00.; Pacific Film Archive collection; non-circulating. CBPF.; Camera, Ernest Miller.; [Cast:] Gene Evans (Sergeant Zack), William Chun (Short Round), James Edwards (Corporal Thompson), Robert Hutton (Private Bronte), Steve Brodie (Lieutenant Driscoll), Richard Loo (Sergeant Tanaka), Sid Melton (Second G.I.), Richard Monahan (Private Baldy), Harold Fong (The Red), Neyle Morrow (First G.I.), Lynn Stallmaster (Second Lieutenant).
The grouping was "designed" by Fuller to be broadly representative of the Korean War-era US Army. Only Sergeant Zack (Gene Evans) survives the massacre, saved when the bullet meant for him is deflected by his helmet. The racial angle arises when white soldiers suggest that the black medic was a deserter. But soon after, a battlefield emergency demands interracial unity.
