the floorboard with the gas pedal and portamatic automatically sends you off in low gear for maximum acceleration hey that really scoots doesn't it when cruising along the open road you can get an extra surge of power at speeds up to 60 miles an hour just by stomping down on the accelerator it's the real boost that can come in mighty handy in an emergency and it's the safety factor when you're passing on the highway fordomatic offers you still another safety plug when you head down a steep hill just flip the selector to load and the proper gear is automatically selected for smooth and effective braking and only in port-o-matic do you find such an efficient combination of both turbine and automatic gears for smooth and instant response only ford-o-matic offers you so many advantages jabs well i wouldn't know this is my first time out well where do you see the skipper go after him old rabbit's foot [Music] they were more charged up than i was the skipper was their champion you could tell it by the way they talked about it and i said the wrong thing right off the bat what um guardian angel looks out for a submarine when the skip is wrong you've got a lot to learn a sub skipper's never wrong that's why we stay alive [Music] we shoved off at 1400 destination unknown i hadn't written to my mother yet about the captain i kept that to myself [Music] mr hayes captain mcgraw would like to see in the order please sir thanks i was about to meet the captain for the first time lieutenant haynes reporting for duty sir aims yes sir have you met everyone most of them sir weaver assistant engineering and diving bad noise let her know all right sit down we're on a special 10-day assignment we recognize our walleye islands about 500 miles west of truck you figure the enemy's doing a lot of construction there in the way of air strips and warehouses but before the carrier boys put an end to their real estate development they want verification we'll use a camera rig periscope make a picture of one continuous sweep we'll get in and out as fast as possible anything to prevent us from frying a few pickles if we get a chance my only restriction is not to jeopardize our primary mission any questions hands no question sir that's all gentlemen [Applause] [Music] why had mcgraw hesitated when we first met studying my face repeating my name mr haynes what straw you'd like to see in the control room right away he couldn't have remembered [Music] in [Music] [Applause] i came in thinking you were here i wasn't sleeping i'm sure you weren't sir you shouldn't have done it done what sir come off it i know you're my son yes sir had me fooled till i saw the scar on your hand is that all you have to say to me after 16 years how long do you think you'd get away with it i wasn't sure sir i asked you a question is that all you have to say to me your mother's still an attractive woman i'm surprised you remember her that well you never wrote never inquired and it wasn't your mother by mutual consent 16 years ago i don't want to talk about it he's forgotten after all that time i thought maybe you'd like to know what i look like you did remember the scar it was you that pulled that dog off when i was four years old and tore your shirt to bandage my hand all right drop it joe haynes has made her a good husband and be a good stepfather i said drop it you broke regulations you know the navy doesn't approve of a father and son on the same ship especially a submarine why'd you do it after all that time i thought maybe you'd like to know what i looked like you are still my father i don't want the men out there to know about this they got the idea that a captain maybe was worried about a blood relative wouldn't be good for morale yes sir i'm transferring you as soon as we get back from patrol for what reason sir you signed under subterfuge you knew about the relationship and you kept your mouth shut you don't care much about my record do you you broke the rule it's your hot potato not mine isn't that the way you always handle things put anybody ashore you can't manage like you did my mother now i'd lieutenant haines you're an officer here you'll keep your remarks to yourself whether you hate me or not come in we have a message in radio shape here mr haney i'll be right there let's go about your tasks as if we'd never known each other aye aye sir by morning the silver fin was moving to a rough sea we've been charging batteries since midnight and at oh 900 i was getting a distress call 20 moon marines 180 20 moon 20 moon marines 20 moon marines distress call captain 20 moon marin it should be mullen somebody's goofing it forget it it's a trick anything to lure our submarines in range of their planes and guns about a year ago the navy divides the simplicity of code to the rescue our own men when the japs stole it we didn't bother to change the codes we capitalized on the difficulty the jap's tongue has with the letter l merons for mullins got it i've got it you got a lot to learn hands what's going on between you and the old man did you have a little argument last night the whole chef's edgy don't be a wiseager haynes nobody's trying to be then straighten out there are 75 men and seven officers aboard this ship we have to live together we want to come out of this thing alive even mcgraw isn't going to help matters 260 260 apple annie apple annie this is playboy station message playboy this is appalannee break six survivors on light raft american tanker just sunk latitude zero seven south longitude one three zero east emergency over captain captain mcgraw this is playboy say again your last playboy this is apple annie break six survivors on life raft american tanker just sunk latitude zero seven south longitude one three zero east emergency over all right tell them we're on our way this is playboy roger we're on our way [Music] no one anywhere has ever seen anything quite like this newest new kind of ford the skyliner the world's only hideaway hardtop just pull the control lever and the magic starts first the rear deck lid swings up [Music] next the all steel top automatically rises then the forward panel falls under [Music] [Applause] the top moves back and down and finally descend smoothly into the rear compartment you saw it happen from an all steel hard top to a wide open convertible in less than a minute and it'll change back again just as easily ask your ford dealer about the world's only hideaway hardtop the new ford skyliner running submerged is going to reduce our speed i know i'm worried about an enemy vessel picking up our last message [Music] what's our position just about it seven degrees south 130 degrees east there they are on the buttons yards prepare the surface two engines prepare to service two engines compared to service two engines downscope [Music] we surfaced at a thousand yards twilight was closing in we could hear the men's voices calling across the water when they cited us [Applause] [Music] so we could see their faces grim and haggard even through the twilight it was just another hundred yards now they're coming come on come on over here [Applause] bridge radar surface contact bearing two two five how far nine thousand yards sir i've cited it captain it's a destroyer hey hello [Music] [Applause] [Music] can't leave those men we still have time [Applause] [Music] there's six men up there six men you can't leave them up there to die [Music] battle station's torpedo battle station's torpedo standby for observation bearing mark 210 range mark 2000 yards [Music] i'll answer headphones sir gunfire they must be shooting at the life raft destroyer coming down our track captain closing fast cops go [Music] all right [Music] got her captain another can of stun up is coming in fast gyro five left and number nine said gyro five left on number nine daru said all right fired up [Music] the arrow ten left and number ten ten left or number ten jerusalem [Music] he's cited the wake he's digging down scope richard for depth charge rig for sonic running rig for depth charge rig for solid running contact close and fast let's go deep use negative flood negative [Music] [Music] captain we've lost propulsion on the starboard shaft what's our depth that's approaching 200 feet sir take it down to maximum depth quarter head two thirds put ahead two thirds [Music] captain that last charge put our radar out of commission that's scram right full rudder mcgraw wasn't going back for another try we had a mission to accomplish the men on the raft had probably been killed by the enemy destroyer but as far as i was concerned mcgraw had left six men up there to die [Music] by the following dawn we were squared away sutton and roby had head injuries weaver had a broken collarbone that put prince in as the exec under mcgraw and foley and myself the only officers in charge [Music] hey skee yeah what's going on between the skipper and haines holding a wingding last night screaming at him about those men we left on the raft i don't like it either but i'm not running this ship and i'm glad i'm not that makes two of us what's going on between them ski i don't know it's like i told sutton means hates your man's guts it really hates me all right knock it off oh hanes i better check with a skipper he plans to stay under tell him we need a battery charge he's in his quarters all right sir come in captain mr prince wants to know how much longer we're going to be submerged we need a battery charge all right it's a matter of your arm nothing close the curtain what's eating i asked you a question you could have tried to save those six men so that's it i don't understand how you can sacrifice men when there's a chance of saving them someday you'll have a command of your own if you want to take a chance on sacrificing your crew for six men that'll be your decision this was mine then i don't want that day to come maybe i'm not officer material maybe you don't have guts for a command maybe how would you know you've lived without a heart for so long that nothing touches you you're a machine sacrificing human beings doesn't mean a thing to you whether it's those men your wife or your son you better get that arm fixed i'll take care of it myself in my own time you do it now sit down [Music] [Music] it was funny like when i was a kid and he was wrapping my torn hand with his shirt a scared kid crying and his father taking care of him reporting approaching squall bearing 268. maybe down 100 feet 100 feet i said [Music] leave me alone i remember i used to wear this cap when i was a little kid i asked you to leave why have you kept this cat for 16 years why [Music] [Music] i never stopped loving you or your mother [Music] but it didn't work out like it should have mother never liked the idea of my being away so much for the boy to raise and all so i took a leap of absence see if we could make a goal but if we were together all the time but it wasn't the service servers never broke anybody up if they were really meant for each other i guess we weren't your mother wasn't happy but she wouldn't admit it she wanted us to stay together on account of you i felt she should have a chance to find her happiness even if it meant my losing to both of you so i cut it clean just like leaving those men up there i had a decision to make i did what i thought was best when the navy thought i was too old for this kind of a command they put me behind a desk and when the war came along they called me back i guess that's the story but you never came back to us not once [Music] it was too tough to open old wounds father [Music] the next two days we ran submerged during the daylight hours and on the surface at night shortly before dusk of the second day we surfaced to get ready for the night run the skipper stayed away from me as much as possible we understood each other and that was enough for the present better surface four engines compared to service four engines prepare to service four engines you better stay below and supervise radar repairs we don't want those japs to catch a snapping hi sir service [Music] mcgraw is on the bridge foley prince and a seaman were on the deck i could hear them from below they were checking topside gear for any noises the japs could pick up [Music] skipper look out what happened the dead old instead a plane came in against the wind we didn't hear him until he was overs the skipper shot and fell overboard you're in commando ted i was in command sutton roby and weaver were injured prince and foley were dead i was the next in command get the old man get some men's hop side on the devil nicer [Music] go down no he's coming in again [Music] go down go down get the old man security [Music] then i got it all at once right in the belly i'd left my father up there to die you killed him didn't you you hated him enough to let him die no [Music] he was my father [Music] if you're all right sir you can relieve me now i think you can carry on mr haynes wooly islands is our objective we've got some pictures to take hell's helmsman steady as you go maintain this heading to light plot course to wooly islands this is going to be a long war mrs hope we stay together we'll stay together mr son there'd be no transfer now just the making out of a report [Music] oh uh [Music] [Applause] [Music] you
