Description: This documentary probes the art, spirit and symbolism of assemblage artist Betye Saar whose work merges the mystical with the social concerns of black America. The artist's interest in Caribbean culture with its blending of Indian, African and European influences as well as its mixture of voodoo and Christianity, is revealed in her Altar Services. In other works, Saar liberates stereotyped black images from derogatory contexts, simultaneously penetrating old and new levels of meaning and awareness.
