Stars Gregory Peck as an amnesia victim who assumes the identity of a noted psychiatrist and is accused of the murder of the man he professes to be. Presents Ingrid Bergman as a fellow psychiatrist who attempts to restore his memory and uncover some lead that would prove his innocence.
Dr. Constance Petersen (Ingrid Bergman) is a psychoanalyst at Green Manors, a mental hospital in Vermont. She is perceived by the other (male) doctors as detached and emotionless. The director of the hospital, Dr. Murchison (Leo G. Carroll), is forced into retirement, shortly after returning from an absence due to nervous exhaustion. Petersen notices that this Edwardes has a phobia about sets of parallel lines against a white background. She also soon realizes, by comparing handwriting, that this man is not the real Edwardes, but an impostor. He confides
