good evening ladies and gentlemen this is Jack Douglas in our previous visits for the world's most glamorous and exciting cities after dark at sundown we have concentrated on Europe and Asia but tonight we're going to see the change that takes place south of the border when the Sun Goes Down and the shadows fall your TV passport has been stamped Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires as we sail across the seven seas to be entertained and informed by South American ways the Jack Douglas true television series in association with Bing Crosby productions across the seven seas combining two different worlds of travel and adventure at home abroad the fabulous 50 adventure and presenting tonight sundown a tour of the world's most exciting cities after the shadows fall [Music] this is Rio de Janeiro formerly the capital city of Brazil and still the glamour capital of the Republic most of Rio lies on the west side of the bay of Rio with Sugarloaf Mountain it's most familiar landmark and here Sugarloaf it's sundown after the shadows fall and not too long after sundown Rio slowly gives way to the bulb light hours the transition is slow because they're working and eating hours are much different than here having supper in Rio at 10:00 or 11:00 p.m. for example is not uncommon well at this early hour Rio is fairly quiet and the only rush is the rush to get home from work the average worker will pick up his favorite newspaper a magazine then hang on for dear life aboard a streetcar or plus [Music] the average middle-class family such as the Cardozo's lives well by any standards the typical meal consists of five or more courses and yes Andreo even a middle class family can afford a maid incidentally the Unser's finished their soup all right but only because of our cameras the movies american portuguese and spanish continue to be a favorite form of entertainment Rio has its own movie industry and this particular production a lavish musical is working overtime to finish this one sequence a colorful Brazilian Carnival dance [Music] watching these lovely girls in there brilliantly colored costumes will certainly make many of us long for the old Hollywood The Hollywood that made all those magnificent musicals with stars like Betty Grable Alice Faye Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell well real hasn't forgotten at about 8:30 p.m. riyo's window shoppers take over the main thoroughfares it's a peepers paradise and there's plenty to peep at the shops are chic the window displays attractive and the quality of the merchandise is unsurpassed Rios better jewelry stores do an incredible volume of business remember the jungles and rivers rich and precious and semi-precious stones are only a few hundred miles away here where its turns the city's biggest producer and seller of semi-precious gems Stearns specializes in custom-made jewelry jewelry designed to your individual tastes and demands the designer creates a special necklace and later Stern's will find just the right stones now sometimes it works the other way the cutters and polishers have fashioned the beautiful amber colored stone and now it's the designers job to fashion the proper setting those light stones on the Foreman's desk are what semi-precious stones look like in the rough his main job is to spot imperfections and of course to cut around these imperfections it's a long and tedious process but our camera will speed it up [Music] in order to grind the facets a special hot wax is placed on the end of a small stick and the stone is then embedded in the wax now this enables the stone polisher to grind the facets without having to hold the stone in his fingers even assuming he could manage to do so still another specialist the goldsmith makes the mounting and completes the ring and when the gold edges of the ring have been bird only the practiced eye of a jeweler could tell that this ring isn't worth the king's ransom in fact it may cost only a few dollars and here at Stern's they count their gems by the trifle here are more examples from Rio's artisans of jewelry [Music] not too far from Stearns the smartest nyan introduces Rios fabulous showman Walter Pinto the entrance to his office in the theater is dramatic to say the least the huge door is made of stainless steel and opens the touch of a button on mr. pintos desk his newest show is called well I'm sure I couldn't pronounce it properly so I'll just pass anyway it really doesn't mean anything it's just gibberish a sort of a gag title but these costumes aren't a gag they're quite lavish and Pinto personally supervises every fitting his competitors say that this is a secret of his success his determination to supervise every single phase of his productions yes even makeup incidentally our camera crew voted this girl the most beautiful showgirl in Rio [Music] and backstage it's always Walter Pinto urging pronto runrunrun and yet the same Walter Pinto handles his performers with genuine affection incidentally that's a girl the curtain goes up the stage rises and the show with a name that doesn't mean anything is about to go on now the show seems to lack Sparkle but the reason is that this is merely a dress rehearsal with Walter Pinto as the sole audience from the modern to the classical ballet ala Pinto now the dance company in a marvelous folk dance segment [Music] finally and naturally the finale ending in a shower of fireworks [Music] oops well that's what dress rehearsals are for that's better and that's how it will be on opening night the night and day club is considered the night spot among Rio's many joy palaces it's almost always packed and the customers really get their money's worth by the way if these girls look familiar you're right the club blown these girls for that movie musical we saw a few moments ago now for the sake of our cameras they turned up the house lights for this Harlequin dance but when the lights are low the black stocking each girl wears makes it appear that the girls dance on only one leg [Music] [Applause] here's the showstopper a carnival of costume samba dancers from samba schools throughout real this review at the night-and-day club is called million dollar baby and it was described to us as a sort of musical around the world in 80 days [Music] now the customers think this is the finale but watch shades of jules verne what will they think of next but the audience loved it and frankly it caught us by surprise too in fact we had to come back the next night to photograph this balloon part of the show because our cameras hadn't been ready the night before but it was fun going back and riyo itself as the kind of a city that beckons people back again and again that's the magic of these South American ways it's been said of South America's to fun capitals that Rio has the glamour but Buenos Aires has the atmosphere well we're impartial but you be the judge as we move on to Buenos Aires first this message from our sponsor this is an aerial view of Buenos Aires the capital of Argentina and with a population of some four million people the largest city in the southern hemisphere the Egyptian obelisk almost seems out of place in Buenos Aires a city that is decidedly Spanish in flavor a city that considers espanol one of the sweetest words ever spoken anywhere and if anyone doubts that Buenos Aires is Spain in South America the blazing neons dispel all doubt [Music] let's be original and start our story in a subway train the man with the bouquet of flowers is Senor car narrow a wine merchant leaving the Train Senor Camaro is greeted not by screaming billboards and vending machines but by beautiful tile mosaics mosaics that any of us are any art museum would be proud to own the work is magnificent even in the poor light by pre-arrangements on your car narrow meets his wife at la boca a district near the harbor and populated mostly by fishermen and artists the artists apparently have little confidence in street numbers they identify their homes simply by placing samples of their work right out on the street black carencia is a typical Buenos Aires restaurant unlike Rio the entertainment is not lavish here folk dancers of the pampas [Applause] [Music] tonight the Carneros bypass lock Orencia and decide to have dinner at still another colourful restaurant the Spada Vecchia named after the italian owners the band is small but the music is loud bread is carried to the tables and baskets wine corks pop like pistols and the crude paintings on the wall are a tip-off that Spada Vecchia is a fun place the kind of a place where people can slip off the shoes relax and act like just plain folks but don't let those corny sketches deceive you some of Spada vecchia's best customers represent the elite of buenos aires society diplomats millionaires Playboy's play girls yes and even people who can barely afford the price of a plate of spaghetti in other words there is no class distinction at Spa de Vecchio well the wine flows and it isn't long before the handkerchiefs flies [Music] at this table the handkerchiefs can wait the Camaro's came to eat this unpretentious entrance is the doorway to the club at shall i wear the atmosphere somewhat more restrained and dignified especially on Monday nights when the waiters take the night off and the customers sit around hoping somebody at the table will fetch the drakes here again the floor show is modest and a far cry from the lavish reviews of real [Music] a famous Spanish novelist has said the Spanish cannot merely listen to music they must either play it or react to it at the at July they react to it it's a beautiful thing to watch as a dozen or more total strangers spontaneously take to the floor relax men she's married [Music] when Cinderella left so did everyone else including our brokenhearted Carolyn who priya de Guerre is the place to go for a man's meal country style cowboy style that is in fact the main means country bar and store on the trail and speaking of bars they have the only bar I've ever seen that has bars no special reason the owner simply wanted to bar the bar but here's part of the reason why this colorful spot is so popular steaks that are actually four inches thick remember this is the Argentine the beef capital of South America this is nothing just the mixed grill barely enough to feed a dozen people but the waiter isn't serving a dozen people just two fellas who stopped in for a late snack now there's at least five pounds of meat on that platter but in 30 minutes it will be gone if it isn't those Gauchos will fly off the wall and attack at least that's the local superstition encouraged of course by the owner [Music] you see these small fires everywhere in the harbor district the fires of the port a nose or dockworkers this port ano on the night shift eats his Charbroil meat Gaucho style like this no they never miss they say that this is the best coffee in Buenos Aires coffee from street vendors who part from thermos bottles it's black it's thick it's hot it's delicious but just for a gag asked for tea you'll die laughing if he isn't drinking coffee the Argentinian will probably be drinking wine and the FIR lot eat plant the biggest in Latin America works around the clock keeping up with the demand as I mentioned earlier our friend car Niro is a wine merchant and one of her lotty's favorite customers [Music] at sundown after the shadows fall the fashionable Albay our hotel is the setting for fashion shows the draw capacity crowds [Music] you'll notice that the men are bored stiff sure they are at 20 minutes to 7:00 on this particular night the children of middle-class dock worker Nestor Rocha gathered in the living room under the watchful eye of their grandmother they were joined by Nestor and his wife to take part in the highlight of the evening watching television these dancers are society girls of Buenos Aires who put on a weekly TV show and donate the money to charity [Music] the girls in pantaloons represent Gauchos while the girls and dresses portray the daughters of the big ranch owner we found wayna saris television quite good and they also import many of America's top TV shows here's brushwork of a different kind this is the great Cordy viola the pride of Argentina's art circles in summer at his mountain retreat he paints animals and Gauchos in winter at home and Buenos Aires he paints nudes or flowers his work speaks for itself senor de viola has spent 25 years furnishing his home in the old country style and today it has the air of a lovely small Museum [Music] his wife the Senora creates artistic pottery but her pride and joy is this piece of furniture a breakfront containing the treasured mementos of her lifetime with Luis Cordova viola at sundown the court Divi Allah's leave the main house and cross the patio to a small cottage which they call the ranch house here by the warmth of the fire they will sit mate' from silver containers and a drop leaf table is just big enough for serving dinner for two [Music] buenos aires like rio is also a shopper's paradise the shops are every bit as chic as Rio or for that matter 5th Avenue New York the shops are generally open until 9 p.m. and the city's most famous exports are alligator handbags silver service and furs maximillian's is the furrier in Buenos Aires Minkus Minkus anywhere in the world this mink is tagged at $4,500 miss Carey loves it and she just can't live without it but she will coats made from the skins of Jaguar and Ocelot are cheaper but are also considered very fashionable the same jungles that supply Rio with its gems provide Buenos Aires with these furs the price range for Jaguar and Ocelot coats full lights and jackets will run from 350 dollars to about 700 dollars in Buenos Aires as in most of South America silver is plentiful the workmanship is excellent the prices are reasonable but the big bargain to make every woman's dream come true is in alligator bags virtually all of the work is done by hand or with the use of minor hand tools [Music] well the midnight hours passed and the faint light of the early dawn brings to an end our true travel tale of two cities Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires the two jewels of a giant continent they have much in common yet in many ways they are poles apart especially at
