Complete Record: In 1776 England imposed a tax of three pennies per gallon on molasses coming into the American Colonies--to be strictly enforced. Job Smith's sloop returning from Surinam carries twice as much molasses as declared. When the discrepancy is discovered Smith offers to pay the tax, he is denounced and the cargo seized. Smith must decide whether to protest--as his fellow citizens demand--or submit to British officialdom.
