[Music] meet Max every morning after a nutritious breakfast you'll find him here jogging 3 miles it's his way of keeping in shape hey Max that's quite a running style how do you feel I feel great just super you know there's nothing like plenty of exercise and good eating oh yeah then what's that this this is just a snack this is Mary like many young people keeping trim is important to her Mary do you always shop so carefully for your food oh yes I think a good diet is essential to good health and then what's that it's a candy bar it's a [Music] snack what you eat makes a difference from formal meals to informal snacks we enjoy a high standard of living yet proper nutrition is still a problem even if we have all the money we need to spend for food malnutrition cannot be solved easily affluent overnutrition is not a problem of our pocketbooks but of our judgment to the stomach and the rest of your digestive system whatever food comes in during meals or snacks between meals must be digested and the calories and other nutrients distributed to the body [Music] hey it's after 10:00 and on a Sunday night even I thought we would through for the weekend ah he's never going to learn but turn on the lights and you turn on the lights huh I always turn on the lights come on turn on the lights all right I don't know about Max he certainly gets enough exercise yeah I can still feel that last basketball game and he's usually pretty calorie conscious when it comes to meals but these snacks yeah you I know what you mean I mean he already had dessert for dinner right and what do we need with this five cookie snack hey let's send it down to the living and turn it into F if he keeps this up his belly will turn into a cookie all the food you eat every day is called your daily diet part of that diet is snacks food not eaten at the conventional three daily meal anything can be a snack sandwiches drinks chips candy fruit a snack can be hot or cold wet or dry salt are your Bland soft drinks for hard ones it could be anything you normally eat at meals too but you choose to eat at some other time and certainly many of them taste good to [Music] us snacking is a way of [Music] life from the standpoint of nutrition there's little difference between three regular meals and six small meals actually more frequent and smaller meals might be better the major problem is that snacking can lead to excesses if you are not careful assuming your body needs 2100 calories for Optimal Health and growth then you cannot eat 2100 calories during meals and then add 500 calories worth of snacks it just won't work most of us know that an excess of calories calories leads to obesity but snacking can contribute to other excesses as well many convenient snacks are sweet like candy or soft drinks others are salty like corn or potato chips most people get plenty of sugar and salt without snacking at all sugar promotes cavities and an excess of sugar could be harmful to those who have a family history of diabetes a large intake of salt could endanger those with a family history of high blood pressure and stroke the saturated fats in candy could hurt people with coronary problems Foods heavily buttered like popcorn are high in saturated fats excesses of sugar salt and fats are one problem but snacking can contribute to deficiencies as well if Mary depended on snacks for all the vitamins and minerals she needs she would not be in good shape particularly she could become anemic from lack of iron snack foods are usually not balanced with other nutrients vitamins minerals protein more snacks here we go again hey give me a hand with these you know if Max keeps filling up on snack foods this body is going to suffer from a lack of essential nutrients hey send us some more vitamins and minerals all he's eating is calories more snacks now just quick Foods we don't always snack because we're hungry sometimes it's just the sight of food or we're looking for something to do even though we know that careless snacking can lead to problems it's hard not to [Music] snack as children most of us were given snacks as a reward changing such snacking habits is difficult pressure is put on us in many ways machines make it convenient especially when the pictures are tempting and the time is short many people expect it of us often snacking is just a habit snacks do taste good and you're often Under Pressure to snack but too much snacking can hurt you so you should develop a policy on snacks part of your food policy your policy on snacks like your overall food policy should start with what the body needs for good growth and health well not just in terms of calories but other nutrients as well right right and a good policy on snacks means planning so instead of snacking on whatever is available you're in control we have to count everything so should your brain it is best to snack out of well-planned meals now that means saving certain portions from your meals borrowing food from each regular meal and putting it aside then it's some other time three regular meals or six small meals you don't care these borrowed foods can then be eaten anytime during the day and by planning your snacks you can avoid being at the mercy of convenience this is especially important because many convenient foods are high in calories salt sugar and fats but when you do have sweet or salty snacks make them a treat not a regular part of your daily diet remember even without snacks we get all the sugar and salt down here we need so whenever you do have them UNS special days then leave something else out a snack food with sugar as the primary ingredient is mostly calories with hardly any other nutritive value ingredients are listed in order of quantity So reading the label can often tell us a lot about how nutritious a snack really is and what the label doesn't tell us a calorie book can some families keep a snack Corner in a cabinet or the refrigerator well stocked with nutritious food this helps them enforce their policy on snacks without any extra effort and reminds them to plan their snacks when they're away from home when you're young especially if you exercise regularly there are few visible dangers of careless snacking but it doesn't take long though to see the effect maybe it's an expanded waistline but in some cases it could be more serious it's up to you to take simple precautions against this [Music] happening now this is a real stance I borrowed it from lunch and brought it along you know you just can't plan meals and not count snacks too a policy on snacks as part of your overall food policy requires a little planning some judgment about which snacks are right or wrong for you and considering all snacks as part of your daily [Music] diet he finally wised up all right [Music]
