Ernest J. Gaines' story recounts the trip a black youngster and his mother take from their Louisiana plantation home into a small town. James encounters a wide variety of responses to their race and poverty and comes to understand, through his mother's reactions to prejudice, that pride and self-respect are crucial to survival and that his mother's insistence on discipline stems from her love for him. From the American Short Story series. Directed by Stan Lathan. Blue Ribbon winner, American Film Festival.
