Description: Presents the story of two victims of schizophrenia as told by their sympathetic brother, focusing on the devastating emotional toll that this disease takes and the necessary adjustments that must be made by patients and their loved ones. The initial symptoms of schizophrenia--such as paranoia, phobic behavior, and depression--as well as the guilt, shame, and denial of the family are brought to light through family members' accounts. One brother committed suicide; the surviving victim, with proper drug treatment, has successfully adjusted to a life of "diminished potential." While there is no help for complete recovery, the different fates of the schizophrenic brothers indicate that an enlightened and supportive family environment can be crucial to a patient's survival and well-being.
