Description: Between 1930 and 1950, approximately one million Americans belonged to the Communist Party. This film tells the stories of a generation of American radicals who came of age during the Great Depression. Former party members reminisce about their reasons for joining and the humanitarian missions they sought to accomplish. Fighting for the causes of unionization, unemployment benefits and social security, these men and women were accused of treachery and espionage during the McCarthy era. Combining archival footage and contemporary interviews, this documentary examines the contributions of the Communist Party and takes a critical look at its relationship to the Soviet Union, its rigid hierarchical structure and sexism. Pete Seeger sings a number of period songs.
