This short film from Hughes Aircraft gives viewers a look at the company’s ground laser locator designator (GLLD), the AN/TVQ-2 GLLD. A tank turret swivels as a tank gunner prepares to fire a shell. A forward observer locates a target with a GLLD and the hidden tank is able to fire at the target without firing any spotting rounds (00:48). Viewers see a laser (01:07), key to the development of the GLLD. The film then shows a AN/TVQ-2 Ground Laser Locator Designator (01:30). Two soldiers carry a GLLD and set it up for action. The forward observer uses the device to range on a target, an armored personnel carrier. The observer ranges then notifies his battery. When the round is fired, he pulls the trigger to send infrared pulses on the target for the laser homing munition. Illustrations and basic animation are used to present the several scenarios for GLLD use, including “Conventional Artillery Manual Fire Control” (03:55); “Conventional Artillery Computer Fire Control” (04:25)—GLLD signals a battery to fire on a tank; and Laser-Homing Munitions (05:13). The film shows a 155mm canon-launched projectile (05:55), a Hellfire Missile, the Air Force’s Maverick Missile, and the Marine Corps A-4 Angle Rate Bombing System. The film then covers how a target handoff to an aerial observer works with the GLLD (06:20), using illustrations and basic animations to show the relay of locating from the GLLD to a helicopter’s locating designator. Two soldiers operate a GLLD in the field (06:45). Viewers then see several tests using the AN/TVQ-2. In the “GLLD with TACFIRE Computer” test, a tank is fired on by a three-piece battery (06:54). Next is a test using a GLLD with a cannon-launched guided projectile (07:21); as a 155mm howitzer is loaded with a laser-guided projectile and fires on a stationary tank. The last test shows the howitzer firing on a moving tank. The film concludes with footage of the two soldiers in the field operating a GLLD, a howitzer firing a projectile, and a missile being fired from the air.

A laser designator is a laser light source which is used to designate a target. Laser designators provide targeting for laser-guided bombs, missiles, or precision artillery munitions, such as the Paveway series of bombs, AGM-114 Hellfire, or the M712 Copperhead round, respectively. When a target is marked by a designator, the beam is invisible and does not shine continuously. Instead, a series of coded pulses of laser light are fired. These signals bounce off the target into the sky, where they are detected by the seeker on the laser-guided munition, which steers itself towards the centre of the reflected signal. Unless the people being targeted possess laser detection equipment or can hear aircraft overhead, it is extremely difficult for them to determine if they are being marked. Laser designators work best in clear atmospheric conditions. Cloud cover, rain or smoke can make reliable designation of targets difficult or impossible.

[Music] historically laying artillery fire has invariably involved the firing of spotting rounds a timec consuming process which not only alerts the enemy and wastes ammunition but needlessly exposes the battery's position today this situation is being reversed the forward Observer can now pinpoint the location of any Target he can see as a result the unseeing artillery battery can immediately fire for effect no need for spotting rounds the key to this advance in modern Weaponry is the laser not long ago a laboratory curiosity the laser is today the heart of a new ranger designator meeting the tri service designator requirement for the forward Observer this is the enttv Q2 ground laser locator designator called glid for short it is one of 22 engineering developmental models being developed by Hughes aircraft company under contract to the US Army's missile research and development command in the field two men can easily carry glid they can set it up and be ready for action in less than 5 minutes The Observer trains glid manually it's high high power telescope gives him a precise aim point to range on a Target he momentarily presses the trigger immediately he gets the target's precise range along with its asouth and elevation he transmits this data to the battery either by automatic data link or Voice Link if the battery is using a laser homing munition the Observer enters the code for that munition when he spots a Target he lays the unit on it ranges and notifies his battery as before he then switches to designate when notified that the round is on its way he holds the trigger down until the round hits let's examine briefly how the system operates when the Observer presses the trigger gids laser emits an invisible infrared pulse small targets may be pinpointed at all operational ranges to designate a target for a laser homing munition glid emits a continuous stream of pulses this illumination not only identifies the target to the munition but provides a point source for the munition to home on the Army has planned several operational scenarios for glid conventional artillery manual Fire Control typically in this scenario a stationary Target is spotted by the forward Observer using glid he quickly takes a Target fix he relays the fix to the artillery battery with this information the battery can immediately fire for effect no spotting rounds are necessary conventional artillery computer Fire Control in this scenario the target is moving in the past conventional artillery was not effective against such targets with glid it is the forward Observer takes a continuous series of fixes on the Target on the basis of these fixes the battery's Fire Control computer accurately predicts the target's future position the battery therefore can fire on the target with effect laser homing Munitions in this scenario the target may be either moving or not as soon as it spotted by the forward Observer he takes a single Target fix he immediately gives the fix to the battery this is all the information it needs to put a round in the Target acquisition basket the forward Observer meanwhile starts designating the target with glid the round homes in for a certain hit with varying detail this scenario applies equally to a variety of Tri service laser homing Munitions the Army's 155 mm Cannon launched guided projectile the Army's Hellfire missile the Air Force's Maverick missile and the US Marine corp's A4 angle rate bombing system to name a few Target handoff to Aerial observer in this last scenario a Target either stationary or moving is spotted by the forward Observer he calls in an aerial Scout when the Scout reaches the scene The Observer designates the target as soon as the scotch laser locator picks up the Target The Observer stops Illuminating it the handoff is complete each of the foregoing scenarios has been operationally proven films of some of the more demanding artillery tests follow in this test a tank is being fired on by a three-piece battery the fire has been directed by a Tac fire computer receiving periodic fixes from glid to avoid damaging the test Target and to simplify instrumentation these rounds were set for Air Bursts here a 150 5 mm Howitzer is being loaded with a laser guided projectile the target is a tank being designated by glid there goes the projectile these test projectiles did not carry Warheads the Howitzer next Target is moving at more than 10 mph there goes the [Music] projectile [Music] another Direct [Music] Hit This Then is glid easy to maintain easy to use highly reliable it not only provides precise Target fixes but can uniquely designate small targets with glid any Target and observer can see an unseeing Gunner can hit and with today's Munitions to hit a Target is to destroy [Music] [Applause] it for
