Describes how the three major religions in the Middle East--Islam, Christianity, and Judaism--are in reality fragmented into smaller sects that compete for influence and souls. Examines the Muslim split between Shi'ites and Sunnis; the sectarian violence in Lebanon where Muslims, Maronite Christians, and Druze are in conflict; and the problem in Israel between Jews of Ashkenazic and Sephardic origin. Shows how, as exemplified by factions within all three faiths, religious activism leads to political activism and confrontation.
