Seattle, Washington to Kyoto, Japan by Philip H. Elwood, 1929

Description: Iowa State College landscape architecture professors Philip H. Elwood and Walter Popham took 4 students (Bethane Carpenter, John Hall, Max Bird, and Norman Morris) on a tour of Japan, China, the Philippine Islands, and Hawaii in 1929. This video covers highlights of the Seattle and Kyoto, Japan portions of that trip. Includes footage of the vessel SS Africa Maru, harbor of Seattle, and 4th of July celebration at sea. Highlights of Tokyo include the New Art Gallery Uyeno Park, meeting Matsumoto and the Secretary to Viscount Shubisawa, Imperial Garden of the Detached Palace, meeting the Uyehara family in the Gardens of the Imperial Hotel, footage of the Imperial Hotel (designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and undamaged by an earthquake). The Nara segment features the entrance to the Great Park at Nara, private residences, and deer in the park at Nara prior to an approaching storm. Highlights of Kyoto (Gion) include floats for a festival, moats and retaining wall of the Nijo Imperial Palace grounds, Kinkakuji garden pavilion, Daisen-in Garden and Ryuan-ji Garden by Soami, and entrance to the lodge of the detached palace.
