Hello, welcome to "Paging Women." 1:15 Because we women are very busy people, 1:18 and because our homes are very important places, 1:20 we're going to turn to our show today 1:23 without wasting a minute. 1:25 We're here to tell you about easier and better ways 1:26 to make your home more pleasant, 1:29 and to make your life as a woman more complete. 1:31 You know, no matter what its size, 1:34 a home covers a great deal of ground. 1:36 It's more than just four walls and a roof. 1:39 It's what you put inside your home, 1:41 and the way you put it together, 1:44 that give it its warmth and its character. 1:45 And so today we're going to meet 1:48 one of the most famous interior designers in the country, 1:49 Mr. William Pahlmann. 1:58 Mr. Pahlmann is going to tell us 1:59 how to make a living room more exciting and more livable. 2:01 And we're going to see how an ordinary house plant 2:04 can be taught to be its own babysitter 2:08 when you're away on a trip. 2:09 And then we're going to meet famous author and actor, 2:11 Mr. Walter Slezak. 2:14 He's going to give us some of his cooking secrets. 2:16 And then we're going to talk about women's clothes, 2:18 your own included. 2:21 And here is the beautiful Venus de Milo. 2:22 You know, it's said that she has the classic figure. 2:25 And in addition, this is a classic work of art 2:28 because its basic simple lines 2:30 have withstood the test of time. 2:32 The fashions we're going to see today are classics too, 2:35 because they're styles that will withstand the test of time. 2:38 To show them to their very best advantage, 2:41 we picked a beautiful building that is a modern classic, 2:43 the new TWA Terminal at the New York International Airport 2:47 with these smooth clean lines 2:50 is a classic example of the best in modern architecture. 2:52 - [Airport Announcer] Trans World Airlines Flight 101. 2:57 Superjet service for Pittsburgh and Los Angeles 3:00 will depart from Gate 14. 3:03 Passengers are now posting to Gate 14 for check-in. 3:06 - This building is an example of how function and beauty 3:09 can be perfectly combined. 3:12 (airport patrons bustling) And the suits we're going to show you today 3:14 are not only timeless, 3:16 but they prove a very important point. 3:18 Every woman has her own figure, and there is a correct cut 3:20 of clothing to enhance each figure. 3:24 In addition, we're going to give you tips on color, line, 3:26 and texture in each of three basic sizes 3:29 to help you look your very best. 3:32 This is a classic modern suit, 3:36 good for almost any time, season, or place. 3:38 And the things that make it that way 3:41 are its simple lines and proportions 3:42 that follow and enhance the natural shape. 3:44 This suit will stay in style for a very long time. 3:47 This particular fabric is a blue and white wool tweed 3:51 with navy blue trim. 3:54 It features a Peter Pan collar 3:55 and bracelet-length sleeves. 3:57 You're looking at the junior figure, 3:59 and now here is the misses figure. 4:01 Her jacket is white. 4:03 The skirt and the buttons are black, 4:05 as is the tie at the neck. 4:06 The fabric is silk and Worcester. 4:09 Regardless of which of the three basic figure types you are, 4:11 this particular suit comes in the proper size and proportion 4:15 to show your figure at its very best. 4:18 And now here is the third basic type, the women's figure. 4:21 This is a linen suit in a lovely rose wine shade. 4:25 And there is a correct balance 4:28 between the jacket and the skirt. 4:30 The effect of each of these three suits is the same, 4:32 beauty through keeping it simple. 4:35 But now let's take a look at some of the ideas 4:38 that can help you get the most 4:40 out of your own figure through color, line, and texture. 4:41 You'll notice that although our models are different sizes, 4:45 and they look as though they're wearing different suits, 4:48 they're actually all wearing the same suit, and so am I. 4:50 With a few minor variations, it's a classic style 4:54 by Jack Sarnoff, designed by Molly. 4:57 You'll notice that the junior suit is all one color 5:00 to give the illusion of greater height. 5:03 You must look for the lighter or the medium tones 5:05 to increase your height. 5:07 The collar stands away from the neck to frame the face, 5:09 and it's lovely with both long and short hair. 5:12 Because the misses figure is the average ideal, 5:16 and it can get away with almost anything, 5:19 it's wearing contrasting colors today. 5:21 You'll notice that the skirt is subtly-shaped, 5:23 not too tight. 5:26 There are no gimmicks on this suit 5:27 to put it out of fashion after one year. 5:29 It just has a lovely, smooth shading to it. 5:31 Now in the woman's figure, you'll notice that the line 5:35 of the jacket blends with the silhouette of the skirt. 5:37 The color of the fabric is darker, 5:40 and the fabric itself has a flat or an unshiny finish 5:42 to give a trimmer look to the figure. 5:45 Now let's take a look at all three figures again. 5:47 (airport patrons bustling) 5:50 Remember the essence of good fashion is simplicity. 5:53 So if you look for an outfit that is basic and simple 6:00 and timeless, you'll have a classic suit, 6:03 and that means you'll have a good investment. 6:06 These suits are just one example. 6:08 Regardless of the price range in which you find it, 6:10 a suit should be proportioned to fit your figure, 6:13 whether it be junior, women's, or misses. 6:16 The size number is not important, 6:19 but the cut and the fit are. 6:21 So look carefully, and you won't have to worry 6:23 about fashion changes from year to year. 6:25 Have you ever decided to turn your living room upside down 6:34 and start all over again? 6:37 Well, every once in awhile I get that impulse, 6:39 but it usually gets me into trouble. 6:41 For one thing, I never know where to begin. 6:43 For another, I find that many of the things I want 6:46 just to cost too much. 6:48 That's why our special guest today is Mr. William Pahlmann, 6:50 one of the world's outstanding interior designers. 6:53 Hello, Mr. Pahlmann. 7:02 We're delighted to have you with us. 7:03 - I'm delighted to be here, Vivian, thank you. 7:05 - You're welcome. 7:07 At the moment, William Pahlmann is designing the interiors 7:08 of a new 800-room President Hotel in Hong Kong. 7:10 In addition to that, he's doing two elegant ballrooms 7:14 in the New York Hilton. 7:17 Bill, let's get down to the main question. 7:19 Is it possible to decorate tastefully 7:21 and still stay within a modest budget? 7:23 - Indeed it is. 7:25 - How would you define good taste? 7:26 - Well, taste is appreciation, 7:29 stemming from knowledge and experience. 7:31 I call it educated appreciation. 7:33 - Can you give us some idea 7:35 of what the very first step should be? 7:36 - Well, I think you should analyze 7:38 what you want out of the house, 7:41 how are you going to use it, who's going to live in it? 7:42 - Do you have any special guidepost 7:45 to arranging the furniture? 7:47 - Well, there are five rather basic rules 7:49 in the room arrangement. 7:52 I brought these sketches along. 7:53 While they're not typical, they do serve as an illustration 7:55 of what I like to get across. 7:58 - Uh-uh. - The first thing is how to get in and out 8:01 of a room, (chuckles) the traffic pattern. 8:03 There is an entry here. 8:05 There's room between the chairs to get to the sofa. 8:06 There's plenty of room around this great lacquer table 8:08 to get to this chair and this ottoman. 8:10 And I think it's a rule that everyone should follow 8:13 is to study such a traffic arrangement in a house, 8:15 and in a room. 8:18 - And not clutter the entrances and exits, in other words. 8:20 - They should not. 8:22 - Oh, this is a lovely room. - Well, that's another one of my points I like to bring out, 8:24 is a focal point. 8:27 Every room should have one, sometimes two, but not too many. 8:28 But this one focal point is in a bedroom, 8:32 is gained by using a very fancy headboard, 8:35 rather Spanish in feeling, 8:37 plus a large mirror and a group of six prints. 8:39 - Mm-hmm, could this be used in some other room, 8:41 or also, besides the bedroom? 8:43 - Of course you could, you'd take the mirror 8:45 and the six prints and put it over a credenza 8:47 or a great chest, you'd have the same effect. 8:49 - Do you have trouble with some of your people 8:51 wanting overdramatic rooms? 8:53 - We certainly do. 8:55 We call those knock 'em dead rooms. 8:56 (Vivian chuckling) 8:58 And at first glance, you might possibly think this is one. 9:00 - Oh, yes! 9:02 - But this was done for a couple who love, they love to hunt. 9:03 They go on safaris and they bring back things 9:06 like these water buffalo skulls, 9:08 but you see the traffic pattern is still good. 9:10 But this room is very livable. 9:12 It's for reading, eating, drinking, and even playing. 9:14 - Can you fit a desk 9:19 into a living room? 9:20 - Quite often. This table when not in use as dining 9:21 could be a work area here. 9:24 But then the next sketch- 9:25 - Oh, hmm, here's the desk! 9:26 - You will shove a desk, find the desk, put in a window. 9:30 It could be put flat against the window, 9:32 but there's plenty of room. 9:33 It doesn't spoil the traffic area 9:34 by putting it in at right angles to the window. 9:36 - And now how about the problem room? 9:39 Let's say the long narrow room. 9:41 - The problem rooms are always with us, 9:43 particularly if you were working 9:45 in some of the new modern apartments. 9:47 And of course, some of the new houses 9:49 have problem rooms too. 9:50 - Mm-hmm. - In this case, the problem was everything being horizontal. 9:52 So we wanted a vertical treatment on the walls. 9:55 They could be wallpaper panels or they could be paintings. 9:57 They could be Chinese panels, but used vertically. 10:01 And you'll notice here in this area, 10:03 we used the vertical pattern on the curtain. 10:05 - You know, today we have a sample room 10:08 to test out all of your ideas. 10:09 Shall we go and take a look at it? 10:11 - I'd like to very much! 10:12 - Okay, just follow me! 10:14 - Well, here we are, Bill, in our sample room. 10:20 Do you have any suggestions for us? 10:22 William The sofa, it's so isolated. 10:24 It's a pity it isn't closer to this chair 10:27 so it could form a conversational group. 10:28 And I find no focal points at all, 10:31 it's pretty much a shambles. 10:33 Vivian I see. 10:34 - Take the traffic pattern. 10:36 I find this pretty cluttered, don't you? 10:38 - Yes, I do. 10:40 It looks as though you'd have to be a broken field runner 10:41 to get through that. 10:43 (William chuckling) - And look at our work area right here, 10:44 smack in the middle of the traffic pattern again. 10:46 And also what disturbs me is the way that the pictures 10:49 are all lined up horizontally 10:51 to give them a little bit longer look than it need have. 10:54 - This, of course, is the incorrect way, you've pointed out. 10:56 How do we go about correcting it? 11:00 - You want to see how it's done? 11:01 - Oh, I'd love to. 11:02 - Well, let's take everything out! 11:03 - All right. 11:04 - Just clear the room! (chimes) 11:10 - Well, this certainly gives us a fresh start! 11:12 Where do we begin, Bill? 11:15 - Well, first that long credenza, which was on that wall, 11:16 I'd like to see it this end of the room. 11:20 - All right! 11:23 (chimes) 11:26 - A long piece of furniture like this 11:27 usually makes a room appear lighter. 11:29 - Yes, it really does! 11:31 Well, what's our next step? 11:33 - Let's establish a conversational grouping. 11:35 In this case, it becomes the focal point of the room. 11:38 - All right! 11:41 (chimes) 11:44 I bet everybody wishes they could move furniture 11:49 this way, Bill. 11:51 (William chuckling) Oh, this arrangement is lovely! 11:52 - And notice how the people on the sylvan and the chairs 11:54 can converse easily, and we've added two open back chairs 11:57 to lend more airiness to the room. 12:01 Except this chair must be moved over 12:03 to provide easy access to the sofa. 12:05 You know, the traffic pattern must be kept. 12:08 - Oh, yes, I remember that point well. 12:10 And then this area rug kind of ties everything in. 12:12 And this nice big cocktail table 12:15 is right within everyone's reach. 12:16 How about the desk, Bill, where will that go? 12:19 - I'd like to see it over there in the window area. 12:21 (chimes) 12:24 - But that not only looks better there, 12:27 but it's right in the light from the window! 12:29 - And it's out of the main area where one can concentrate. 12:31 - Well, that's an important consideration. 12:33 Now how about our television set? 12:35 - It would be best opposite the sofa so everyone could see. 12:37 Let me show you. 12:42 - Okay. 12:43 (chimes) 12:48 William And you see, we have broken the horizontal look 12:49 of the wall with a vertical bookcase. 12:51 And also note the splash of color of the chair. 12:54 It breaks up the monotony of too much wood on that wall. 12:56 - It looks very pretty there. 12:59 What are we going to do, though, 13:01 about all these pictures now that are off-center? 13:02 Can we take care of those as easily as we took care 13:05 of the furniture? 13:07 - We certainly can. Let's just get rid of them. 13:08 (chimes) And now for a better arrangement. 13:11 (chimes) 13:13 You see the new arrangement as a more 13:14 of a vertical appearance, 13:15 rather than that old scattered sort of horizontal look. 13:17 And we do have a rather isolated work area in the desk. 13:20 And we have, I think, a very successful conversational 13:23 grouping here around the large cocktail table. 13:26 - Well, the room looks lovely, Bill. 13:28 You know, we hear so much about how accessories 13:29 give a room its personality. 13:32 Can you tell us something about that? 13:34 - I'd like to very much because accessories 13:35 give a room the, well, the atmosphere or the aura, 13:39 particular pertaining to the mistress of the house 13:43 who dictates this sort of thing, and who collects them. 13:46 I'm a great believer in collecting nice objects, 13:49 but they're not necessarily expensive. 13:52 But they should be selected for their scale 13:54 and their good looks, and they should 13:56 have some quality about them, of course. 13:58 - And you have anything else you'd like to tell us? 14:00 - Yes, there's one thing I'd like very much 14:02 to get across, that if ever in doubt, you're not quite sure, 14:04 always keep it simple. 14:09 - William Pahlmann, thank you so much 14:10 for coming to visit with us today. 14:12 You've given us some good, basic hints 14:13 on how to liven up our living room. 14:15 - I've been happy being here, 14:17 and I thank you very much for asking me. 14:18 - Plants can be so beautiful around the house 14:23 that they really are a very important part of better living. 14:26 They bring in life and color, 14:29 kind of bring nature right into the house. 14:31 But they also bring problems along with them. 14:33 However, fortunately with plant problems, 14:36 they can be easily solved with just a little common sense 14:38 and some expert advice. 14:41 So today, we're going to bring you the case histories 14:43 of three typical housewives and their plant problems. 14:45 Case history number one, The Case of Anxious Anna. 14:49 Anna is affectionate, loving, 14:53 but she's terribly worried about her plants 14:56 because she's going away on a two-week trip, 14:58 and she just can't find a reliable babysitter 15:00 for her little indoor garden. 15:03 Well, you may not believe this, Anna, 15:05 but this simple piece of cotton wicking 15:07 is the best babysitter you can find for your plant. 15:10 Now, after you've watered your plant, 15:13 and be sure not to overwater, you wrap the piece 15:15 of cotton wicking in the center with aluminum foil 15:18 to prevent evaporation, and you put the exposed end 15:20 in a quart of water like this, and insert the other end 15:24 into the dirt of the plant. 15:28 And presto, your plants will be watered while you're away. 15:30 Now, if you don't have cotton wicking, 15:33 you can use a piece of ordinary clothesline like this, 15:35 provided you remove the sizing first. 15:38 Oh, why Anna, you look so much happier! 15:40 I'm glad we were able to help you with your problem. 15:42 And now let's take a look at case history number two. 15:45 It's The Case of Puzzled Pauline. 15:49 You see, Pauline's plant seemed to grow unevenly, 15:52 and she just can't figure out why. 15:55 Well, maybe it's because she forgets 15:58 to turn her plants like this at regular intervals 15:59 so that the light will equally hit all sides. 16:03 Because you see, plants tend to grow toward the light. 16:06 So if you don't keep turning them, 16:08 you will have that problem. 16:09 My, Pauline, you look delighted! 16:11 I'm glad that our simple idea was a help to you, Pauline. 16:13 Now let's go on to our third case history. 16:16 The Case of Cautious Carrie. 16:19 Carrie is conscientious, sincere, 16:21 but she's very sad because she just doesn't know 16:24 how to cultivate her potted plant. 16:27 Well, our experts tell us that you should loosen the soil 16:29 of the plant as far away from the trunk of it as possible. 16:32 Use a blunt fork or a dull pencil, 16:36 and cultivate just about an inch or so deep. 16:39 Do this when the soil around the plant 16:42 looks hard and crusty. 16:43 Well, I hope that our staff experts 16:45 have helped to solve some of your problems. 16:47 I know that they've solved some of Carrie's, 16:49 because she looks so much happier. 16:51 All of our case histories today have one common problem. 16:53 And that is the question of what to do about bugs 16:57 when they get on plants, even in the house. 17:00 An aerosol house and garden-type insecticide 17:05 is the perfect answer. 17:08 But it's important to the health of your plant 17:09 that you follow the directions on the can carefully 17:12 whenever you use one. 17:14 Now be sure to hold the can 17:16 12 to 18 inches away 17:16 (can spraying) from the plant like this. 17:18 It's the ideal treatment for an indoor plant, 17:20 but don't hold the can closer to the leaves. 17:22 Don't soak them, because most sprays are cold 17:25 as they come from the spray opening, 17:28 and you could freeze the plant. 17:30 That's why if you spray too close, 17:32 the leaves may turn brown and shrivel after a day or so. 17:35 Now let me demonstrate the correct way again. 17:38 (can spraying) 17:41 You'll notice that when I hold the can 17:42 at the proper distance, this paper doesn't get wet, 17:44 and neither does the plant, 17:46 (can spraying) so there'll be no frostbite. 17:49 But the bug-killing ingredients are on the leaves 17:51 where they can get to work. 17:53 Remember, if you can see that the plant leaves 17:55 are soaking wet, 17:57 (can spraying) you're too close, and you may be harming the plant. 18:00 However, if that does happen, keep the plant watered. 18:03 With the bugs gone, new green shoots may come along 18:06 and save the day. 18:08 There are so many products in aerosol cans these days 18:11 that it's good to know how to get the most out of them. 18:14 Let's take a look inside this spray type aerosol can 18:17 and see how it works. 18:20 This is the product, and this is the compressed gas 18:22 found inside all aerosols. 18:24 It pushes down on the product, 18:27 and sends it up this little tube, 18:29 right out the spray opening in the button. 18:31 Now always try to hold the can as upright as possible 18:34 as the directions state, because if you don't, 18:36 after you've used it for awhile, 18:39 this little dip tube might peek up out of the liquid, 18:41 and then you'll just spray the gas. 18:44 Many aerosols have a little dot on the can 18:46 to show the way the spray opening should point. 18:49 Now sometimes after the can has been handled, 18:52 this button turns around. 18:55 And if the can is tilted 18:57 when you press the button, 18:58 (can spraying) you're likely to get no spray. 19:00 If that happens, simply turn the button back 19:02 to the marking dot, or if there is no dot, 19:04 just give it about a half turn, 19:07 and see if it doesn't spray. 19:09 (can spraying) If you follow these ideas, you'll be getting the most 19:11 for your money, and who doesn't want to do that? 19:13 (Walter vocalizing) 19:19 ♪ Bom bom ♪ 19:23 (pans clanging) 19:24 Why Walter Slezak, hello! - Why Vivian, (claps) what an utter surprise! 19:26 - Well, I see you've invaded our kitchen here, 19:28 and made yourself very much 19:30 at home. 19:31 - Yes, I plead guilty to that. - You know, you're also guilty of keeping me up 19:33 half the night! 19:35 - I have, when? 19:36 (Vivian chuckling) - Reading your new best seller, 19:37 "What Time is the Next Swan"? 19:38 - What time is the what? 19:40 - "What Time is the Next Swan"? 19:41 - Oh, "What Time is Next Swan"! 19:43 That wonderful marvelous book! 19:45 - Oh, an interesting, funny book. 19:46 I enjoyed every word of it. 19:48 - Yes, you and 60,000 other readers, I'm happy to say. 19:50 - Well, good, and you're writing another? 19:51 - Yes, I'm with book again. 19:53 And this book will have something to do with food. 19:55 I will unveil some of my more favorite recipes. 19:57 - Oh, well, then that's why you're here 19:59 in the kitchen. 20:00 - Exactly. You see, I've discovered something. 20:02 Most women make very good cooks, 20:04 but very few men make great chefs. 20:06 I happen to be one of them, I'm a tremendous chef. 20:08 You see, it's not a coincidence that all great restaurants 20:11 hire men as chefs. 20:13 They wear big silly things on their head. 20:15 I don't because I don't need it. 20:16 - You're very modest, Walter. 20:18 - I am a modest man. I take pills. 20:21 (Vivian laughing) - What is your recipe today? 20:22 - Today, I'm going to cook frankfurter goulash. 20:24 - Frankfurter goulash? 20:26 Well, I've heard of goulash, 20:27 but with- 20:28 - Don't blanch, my dear. Frankfurter goulash is an unusual goulash. 20:31 You see, it doesn't matter if a humble ingredient 20:33 like a frankfurter goes in, as long as it's made 20:35 with love, with affection, with a certain savior faire. 20:37 And it will make a very, very aromatic dish. 20:41 - Well, what goes into this aromatic dish, Walter? 20:45 - Well, first of all, onion. 20:47 Wonderful yellow onion. 20:52 Then we have green peppers, 10 of those. 20:53 - 10, how many does this serve? 20:57 - Four, in my case, three. 20:59 - Oh! - Grown-ups. 21:01 Then we take tomatoes, half a can of those. 21:03 - Mm-hmm. 21:07 - And then garlic. Garlic, garlic? 21:09 Oh, here. 21:13 - Oh, I see you come prepared. - Every well-dressed man should wear garlic. 21:17 (Vivian chuckling) 21:18 Then the rest of the ingredients 21:20 are shortening, Worcester sauce, 21:21 a little cornstarch in case 21:25 it gets too thin. 21:26 - Mm-hmm. - Paprika, Tabasco, salt, pepper. 21:27 - And the frankfurters? 21:30 - Oh, the frankfurters. - Oh, even the very greatest chefs need a good retriever. 21:33 Your hotdogs, sir. 21:36 - Thank you, my dear. 21:37 (bowl thuds) Now, after the shortening, 21:39 (playful music) a few tablespoons, it's good and hot, 21:41 we peel, cut, and fry the onions. 21:44 After the onions turn brown, we add the garlic, 21:48 one clove finely crushed. 21:50 Sprinkle them with paprika, 21:53 and add our rough cut of green peppers. 21:57 Then half a can of tomatoes. 22:01 The seasoning, and finally we add our package 22:06 of frankfurters, which we've sliced, 22:10 and we simmer for four or five minutes. 22:12 And then we are ready to serve frankfurter goulash. 22:14 The true glorification of the lowly. 22:17 - Oh, that smells marvelous! 22:23 Looks delicious, may I have a taste? 22:25 - No, no, you see, cooking is only a fragment 22:27 of creating a masterpiece. 22:30 The real artistry comes when you serve it properly 22:31 in a romantic setting. 22:34 - Walter, this is a masterpiece. 22:41 It's absolutely delicious! 22:43 - It's not only a masterpiece, it's even good! 22:45 But you know, one of the most important thing 22:47 is that whatever you serve, serve with chic and elegance. 22:48 - I agree. 22:52 Walter, thank you so much for being with us today. 22:54 We've enjoyed it immensely. 22:56 - So did I.
