This examination of American and Russian space ventures is divided into three parts. The first deals with "near space": its definition, atmosphere, the effects of gravity, and the physics of achieving orbit. The second part describes the operation, discoveries, and types of satellites. The final section depicts man in orbit. It begins with attempts using animals and then shows highlights of manned flights, including the docking of Skylab I. Human response to weightlessness, g-forces, isolation, and being away from earth are recorded.
