Russian X-Ray Film

Year Published: 1962

Creator: Haskins Laboratories

Format: 16mm/video file

Description: Examines standard Russian, spoken by three native male speakers. Illustrates palatalization and consonant clusters as well as vowel allophones that go with palatalization. X-ray techniques show the articulatory process and acoustic output of native speakers; prepared scripts, consisting mainly of short meaningful utterances, illustrate selected phonetic features. Speakers were chosen both for linguistic suitability and lack of physical characteristics that might interfere with X-ray quality. From the X-Ray Film series
