RIP Raymond Moriyama - Carman house, Pine Grove ON ca 1964 (Super 8)

Description:

Silent. This is my maternal grandparents’ house, a converted cottage on the Humber River in Pine Grove (Woodbridge), Ontario which Donald Carman purchased in the 40s. I believe Grandma Kay happened to meet the wife of soon-to-be-celebrated architect Raymond Moriyama in an art class, and Moriyama built a transformative addition to the house around 1964 - shortly before he began his first major project, the Ontario Science Centre.

In 2011 the house had been sold and was destined for demolition not long after. I shot this Super 8 footage of the house that summer. I sincerely hope Moriyama’s Science Centre is spared the same fate now that Doug Ford is effectively toast.

I messed up the colour temperature setting on the indoor stuff, hence the orange bias. But you get the idea.

RIP Raymond Moriyama, 1929-2023.
