Explains that in order to protect the sea routes of its 3000 ships against piracy, it conquered and fortified coastlines and islands from Dalmatia to Crete, and finally Constantinople itself with the help of the Fourth Crusade. Points out that its art and architecture, a confluence of European, Greek and Byzantine styles, and its riches dazzled the world.
