[Music] tonight Saturday evening event presents the Pacific Ballet Theater performances by gifted young musicians katcha and Corey surc West Coast Sil screen artists Demar grass composer Ralph Dyke his role in Jupiter synthesizer and friend over the past 10 years computers have become valuable tool to the community's artist population they can be used to create pictures and rearrange and print millions of words for television and Stage Productions a new computer called the Roland Jupiter 8 synthesizer is now being used by musicians to produce sounds forly only available by whole orchestras now we want to get that ping back and the sound on this this is the one you wanted with the eqo yeah try that one and see what happens it I think the left hand one the gentleman on the left is Ralph Dyke composer and keyboard artist that sounds nice Ralph is a Pioneer in computer music like the combination combining his skill as a musician and his special mathematical ability Ralph becomes a kind of sophisticated oneman Symphony comes in here speed it there it is so that had sort a nice ring and that's got to [Music] speak we could we take a combination of both when I first started um that's working with electronic music in U at the University of British Columbia I was very hesitant to record anything and U it's because the medium was uh very difficult to use I always felt that uh it relied on playing the keyboard which seemed to me a bit Antiquated considering the fact that it was uh quote electronic music and so we could control it electronically so I designed the computer that we using and uh that evolved over the last 8 years into machine that we have now that's very easy to use so it has come a really long way from say the early '70s it's pretty good you know I think I'm going toh take it back up and um the tune key it's the nice thing about this device is that all you have to do is hit tune make a couple of adjustments and have eight synthesizers in perfect tune perfect L that's right this doesn't have any great peaks in it is it uh it might in that one part we'll just let it now fast forward should be coming in here that would be about it the programming of the uh comp computer which is what it is is uh a technical art and it's it's like learning how to play the piano or learning how to play the flute and when you first start the pieces that you enter into s terribly mechanical but after you learn how to interpret and make one note a little louder one a little brighter one a little softer speed up and slow down the tempo and make it Musical then it starts taking on a musical form and it takes on what you are like the kind of personality you want to put into the music and so it becomes less a computer and more of a an instrument um so I have the part loaded in and I'm going to uh transpose channel one so transpose all of it - 12 which is an octave and the next one which is going to be transpose all of it- 12 [Music] channel three transpose everything minus 12 quiet and uh Channel 4 transpose all of itus 12 very quiet okay we'll see how this uh my sound just going must [Music] you want to keep what we got on 13 and 14 and put on 15 16 15 16 yeah we had sound just a men together so I I took it off cuz I didn't know going on that's where it should be uh what about the EQ well do it until it sounds [Music] good yeah sounded better you can actually get rid of get rid of the low stuff on it because I have an underneath part on this this is the right range though definitely you can roll it kind of a honk in here I want pull yeah you can get rid of that it's starting to sound good now just hang on I'm just going to flip the sound over I can flip it I believe that what I put into the machine is me and I don't think of it as the machine plays what I tell it it doesn't do anything on its own does what I tell it to do so it's playing me and Paul's playing the flip and so it's the two of us working together [Music] m [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] la oh [Music] [Music] m [Music] n [Music] oh [Music] [Music] oh [Music]
