Question Before the House (1952)

these are father they have come to our studio from all parts of the state up to one half hour ago they had never met each other but they have something in common their songs phase military service these are mother they don't always like to talk about their problem they are here tonight because their funds are being drafted and they want to know why these men have served in the Armed Forces they have younger brothers or nephews who are facing the dress they have seen something of the world and they're here to say what they think these girls have made plans some of them are engaged some are trying to decide they have questions in their mind they want to know what military service will do to their flash these boys are just out of high school they're not quite sure but the rural homes for young men like themselves sometimes they would rather not think about the future but tonight they and their parents and their friends are going to face squarely the question before the house my name is Edwin for sometimes we people of state college and the wicd have been asking our citizens around the state what they think about the matter of military service as it affects them in their family we would like to tell you tonight what we found out we could have played back for you the tape recordings that we made these things these people said or we could have tried to give you our impression of what they said and how they sounded we thought instead that we would try something different so we asked a group of citizens just the ordinary folks farm people housewives numbers of 4-h clubs if they would help and they said they would we asked them to to take the part of a family the atoms and let you know some of the things that they that they learned about the feelings of people around Iowa we asked them to represent a certain part of the population certain attitude now we will meet them in a little while and you will see how they do react and they're going to need your help before we need ireland's family I think I ought to tell you something about them this is the addams family back porch it's just after dinner buddy's project 15 can little cool outside school and the family is finishing dinner 16 yes just about 8 15 and here comes mr. getting the notice the boundary shop or perhaps for the hottest fantasy is ever safe but yes not only a chat but most of the mothers at the table expressively 15 is filled considerable event thank you way back in the back of our heads somewhere are the ideas that don't quite get out in other words we we say one thing but we're thinking another let's go back to our family again and ask them what they were really thinking as they were saying things we just heard him say this is adam what were you really thinking they loved and reared and educated our son simplest for cannon fodder surely that cannot be my husband that I don't always agree he is always so sure he's right maybe he doesn't understand that there are other opinions also then too there's so much that he's evil in the service our boy doesn't smoke he doesn't drink his particular about the company he keeps and if it goes into the service he may not have the strength because of his youth to stave off the temptation of course I'm worried in my mind I'm in an awful spot after you go through the service and come out and you look back at it and then venture if you glad you took that you wouldn't do it again you wouldn't do it again because it's a waste years those years are very productive years when you first get started there's boys in a spot he's gonna have to go he's going to have to accept me and my mind I doubt I i really wonder how he's going to take the stirrer he's headin he's been just a little more protected than the average boy he's the only Son the mother is very protective he's a good boy he's got good qualities but it just makes me wonder how he's going to do and I just wonder how much this is going to take it she's on a spot bill you're a little older when you met them the servicemen Glenn will be you were 23 he's 19 your character with a little more well formed you were more mature and you were perhaps a little better able to say no when temptations came your way to Dan plan is I can care and we're old enough to know it well marriage is what we want and yet we can't deny that were younger than well most couples are when they get married it seems to me that grandmother is kind of made his decisions for in a while and that's going into service and deciding about a willing to take a deferment or not old decision anything helps bring him up a little more and maybe help us settle are probably some too we didn't buy their voice sailing nor an aviator but we did raise enough to do a good job do whatever job had to be done when it had to be done and some of them have been dirty jobs this is just another one of those dirty jobs we didn't choose it somebody's got to do it and yet the very fact we enjoy the Liberty we do in this country due to the fact that somebody was willing to dirty job and maybe each generation will have to do it until somehow or other we find a better way of solving our international problem I don't know mother I can't see Glenn letting the other boys do his work for him how you feel but still in all I believe them as a job to do want to do this chair that's right does when my part comes like my time is there I figure I might as well do it you know how about I hate believe there that but I guess it's my time would all have to take it and do as I can do I don't want to back down on anything I only got the rest the boys just like dress the boys are going it's hard to say that though when you got livestock at home but first your time it's your time now first more family Wilson what they say think when you people take a little time to talk over what advice you would give to remember those families who had a chance to talk to her what would you say to them what sort of good counsel could be given you gotta go boys go very well where who can work this thing out with the family the best way even see fit you've been through it your family's face the same thing and you know what what Billy we've been in service amount now what did you through it all right just have to make up her mind to google for us just one thing I'd like to mention these been lovely discussion about getting exemptions now I wish that there was no such word concerning this military training if if they would just take everyone when they graduate from high school I think would be a fine meal no exemption at all except physically disabled people and secondly they shouldn't get keep them in over 12 or 18 months or more spin on things I think we always knew I okay what the what do you think we ought to tell us boy what's some good ghost to tell the boys going to be inside keeping in tellesberg itself well you should take temptation now that's what a sweet for service because that if you're in service it'll make any difference of the interpreter one big problem is to reconcile her to the fact that her boys doing in service well we didn't think about that part of the problem so much as a farm problem we were thinking that how would you get is more money in being mad when you're in the army but I don't think that's one of the main part of the main yes say but nothing you have to look at you might have a family while you're in the army and something might happen till yesterday and there your bride would be with a soulless possibility of a family what do you think will always think maybe somehow another this you might get into something and I made it right when you get out of the service piece and getting the farm for instance maybe mechanics you get to work on different kinds of motors and learn how to speak and well maintained and there is a chance to be for the forward knees getting into some branch of service like that mm-hmm well blame you you're not very old yet you haven't got your mind made up and quite a
