Description: On November 20th, 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson returned to his alma mater, Southwest Texas State College (now Texas State University – San Marcos,) to attend the inauguration of Dr. James Henry McCrocklin as the institution’s fourth president. This film is comprised of clips of the inaugural ceremony, including processional and audience, the address given by President Johnson, and segments of the speech by Dr. McCrocklin. Following footage of the ceremony are clips of the event and audience from different angles, and President Johnson greeting attendees and well-wishers as he tours the campus.Distinguished guests attending the ceremony include First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson; Secretary of the Interior, Stewart Udall; Director of the Office of Economic Opportunity, R. Sargent Shriver; Senator Ralph Yarborough; and Texas Governor John Connally. In his remarks, President Johnson entreats the residents of San Marcos, TX to organize and join in the war against poverty.Lyndon B. Johnson attended Southwest Texas State Teachers College in 1927, and graduated in 1930 with a teaching certificate and a Bachelors of Science in History. He received the first Distinguished Alumnus Award granted by Southwest Texas State College in 1959, and the first doctorate of Laws conferred by the school in 1962.
