[Applause] [Music] Vatican City welcomed recently president Charles de Gaulle in an historic meeting with Pope Paul the sixth it was the French chief of state's third visit his first was to meet Pope Pius the 12th during World War two his second was 8 years ago when he met John the 23rd here on his third visit the French president was accompanied by his wife Prime Minister Pompidou foreign minister Kubb de Merville and the French ambassadors to the Vatican and Italy [Music] in their public addresses they also had a private meeting both Pope Paul and president de Gaulle stressed the need for international cooperation the Pope expressed satisfaction at the movement towards European unity as he noted the 10th anniversary of the European Economic Community which had just been celebrated in Rome speaking in French he said but this is only one stage on the road to peace and true fraternity between all the peoples of the earth we must aim higher and widen the horizon to the dimensions of the world this is what we wanted to recall in our new encyclical on development the new word for peace in our century he recognized that France was moved by similar considerations and he praised the extent to Frances aid to developing countries in reply the French president praised the Pope's unending search for peace he added this piece of which your holiness is the first defender requires that all these disparities which separate poor nations and rich nations all over the world should be banished [Music] a flower show at Orly ah in the Loire Valley a garden with in the garden of France has opened this year this international garden festival will last six months a huge Park is its setting and visitors may see much of the exhibition from the comfort of a small train over 300 florists from 14 countries are displaying their best flowers and shrubs three exhibition halls have been transformed into hot houses where the flowers are periodically changed [Music] roses and other summer flowers followed spring flowers such as irises [Music] these flowers -
