Complete Record: Onions are an important article of trade for the DOGon. They are grown near a well or water hole where they can be irrigated twice a day by women carrying clay pots or calabashes. When the onions have grown, the greens, or tops, are cut with a sickle, pounded into a wet mash and formed by the women into balls to be put in the sun to dry. The bulbs, the onions themselves, are also pounded into mash - but by the men. Later this mash is also pressed into ball and dried out. This preserves both parts of the onion crop until they can be brought to market to be sold as a spice for stews. Includes shots of African mothers and babies.
