An introductory overview to a history of European immigration alternates formal narrative and historical film with interviews and color footage of present-day descendants of the groups studied. One man who arrived at age eighteen and eventually became an immigration inspector, determining who should enter after him, is interviewed in the deserted Ellis Island facilities, which closed in 1954
