Description: Alternately romantic, melodramatic and freewheeling, Nakajima's partly autobiographical film meshes an unconventional love story with a revealing window into Japan's gay subculture. Okoge, a slang term for a woman who associates with homosexual men, refers here to sweet-tempered Sayoko who offers her cramped apartment to Goh and his older lover, Tacchi. For a time, this unusual menage a trois provides a measure of liberation from society's conformist code until familial pressures cause the men to separate. Sayoko assumes the role of go-between in procuring new liasons for Goh but in so doing becomes embroiled in an abusive relationship. The film's celebratory conclusion illustrates how the power of love can transcend confining categories. (Circulates).
