Winters conceives a plan to steal a painting, copy it, sell the copy, then return the painting. To do it, he springs a convict from jail, paroled to him as an employee, by pretending to be his grandfather and a general. In the end, the buyers discover the hoax, the painting is returned, and Winters gets no money, but Winters gets the girl.
