His mother wants him to go to college and become a lawyer, while his father wants him to just sustain a middle-class lifestyle. Peter is involved with a girl named Julie whom he loves. They have a plan to save money and leave their hometown behind. In his desperation, Peter steals money and a car from the car lot where he works. Once Julie sees how Peter has turned their plan into a criminal act, she doesn't want any part of it. Furthermore, she is pregnant.
