Description: Produced by the Public Relations Department of the New York Central System and New York Central Railroad, the 1942 film New York Calling offers viewers a tour of all they can see in New York City by visiting via New York Central’s many lines that connect the country with the famed city. The film opens with a shot of the skyline of New York City (00:10), and then follows a modern and luxurious train as it follows the Hudson River (00:38), passing the highlands (00:52) with Breakneck and Storm King Mountains as well as West Point. Travelers play cards in the luxurious boxcars as the train leaves the Hudson and follows the Harlem River to Manhattan Island before diving into a tunnel under Park Avenue. Grand Central Terminal (02:11) hosts more than one-and-a-half million people every day; the Grand Central Zone boasts such famous landmarks as the Chrysler Building (02:36). The film’s "tour" of New York City begins on the lower end of Manhattan Island (02:55), with Old Trinity Church, Wall Street, and the bustling harbor—home to the iconic Statue of Liberty. A sightseeing yacht (04:40) is one of the best ways to see the city and its remarkable skylines as it leaves the harbor and heads up the East River. Passengers enjoy spectacular views of Midtown and New York Hospital. The yacht moves onto the Harlem River then onto the Hudson, passing under the George Washington Bridge (05:44). At Bowling Green, Broadway meanders through towering buildings and passes City Hall. At Washington Square and 5th Avenue, kids play in a water park. Men and women survey works of art on display at Greenwich Village (06:45). The tour continues with a visit to the observatory deck of the Empire State Building (07:25), the New York Public Library, and the world-renowned shopping of New York City. On 5th Avenue is the Rockefeller Center (08:28). "Centerettes" lead tours of Rockefeller Center, and visitors and take a behind-the-scenes tour of NBC (09:35). NO visit to the Rockefeller Center would be complete without a trip to Radio City Music Hall (09:54)—it is the largest theatre in the world and one of three in Rockefeller Center. The tour continues with visits to St. Patrick’s Cathedral (10:25), Central Park (11:00), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (11:09), Museum of the City of New York (11:52), the American Museum of Natural History, and the Hayden Planetarium. Moving up Riverside Drive, viewers are treated to Grant’s Tomb (13:09) and Columbia University (13:22). Farther uptown, visitors enjoy the New York Botanical Garden (14:06) and the New York Zoological Park, also known as the Bronx Zoo (14:58). The seemingly endless activities continue, as the whole family will have fun at Coney Island (16:38). The best of baseball is found in New York City, where games are played at historic stadiums, including Yankee Stadium (17:25). And no trip to New York City would be complete without a visit to Times Square (17:52), which is transformed at night by the glittering and glowing signs—a testament to New York’s status as the entertainment capital of the world. The film concludes with a return to Grand Central Terminal, the nexus of the New York Central Railroad system, one that provides safe and comfortable train cars for the most modern train-riding experience.
